Personal Trainer for Older Adults

  • I'm surprised to be asking this as starting a fitness habit used to feel like such a simple thing, just get myself into the gym, problem solved. Now that I'm a little older, a little heavier, with a few minor health issues, I understand the hesitancy and anxiety some express about starting over again in fitness.  I checked the archive and much of it is a bit dated. What are all of us late middle age folks doing to creep back into fitness? I'm thinking of starting with a personal trainer just so I don't hurt myself and start at the right place.  Cost-effective would be nice.  How are things at the YMCA these days in Berkeley and Albany? Or should I try for a trainer outside a gym? Would love to hear about anything that is working for anyone else.  Female trainers only please.

I am always delighted to recommend Haley Shevener (http://haleyshevener.com), who was recommended to me by a friend who has worked with her for several years. I’ve seen her at her house where she has a space set up in her backyard, but I believe she might also work at some area gyms. She specializes in perinatal and postnatal training & has experience working with clients across ages and stages. I went to her 18 months after my son was born after repeated failures to self-start on exercise, experiencing chronic low back pain & feeling like I needed someone to tell me what to do. With just a couple of sessions she helped jumpstart me into a routine that I’ve managed to keep up for about five months now on my own at home. Pain is pretty much resolved and I feel much stronger and fitter than a few months ago!

Dear 50+ I work out at the Albany Y four days a week. It's a wonderful facility with excellent trainers. It's well run and friendly.  It's a welcoming place for the "way past the spandex age crowd" though there are lots of younger folks there as well. There are fantastic classes from pilates to Step to Nia to TRX to barbells to Yoga.....check out Mary's Senior fitness classes. AND there are lots of wonderful personal trainers. Weight lifting classes three times a week. Weight lifting is really beneficial for building strength, preventing falls, building bone mass.  Huge range of abilities/athleticism. Some people pick up 2 lb barbells while others in the room are picking up 20 and 25 lb barbells. No judgement and it's fun! . Highly recommend the Albany Y. ( I am 76 yrs old.)

I am 60+ and last year joined the YMCA of the E. Bay (Oakland, Berkeley, Albany and other too far for me).  I very much enjoy the classes offered at Oakland and Berkeley.  While I like the proximity of the Albany gym (I can walk), it is geared exclusively to the elder and more frail.  I also picked up pickleball with Albany Rec (meet at the HS gym on Sundays and at the new courts on Thursdays) -- it is welcoming to all levels.  Sorry I can't comment on personal trainers, but I look forward to reading the responses of others.

hi!  I now work with a really good trainer who comes to my house and is super reasonable.  She charges $60. a visit which is really good.  She brings some weights with her and we work on strengthening and balance.   I asked her whether I should give out her info here but she prefers that I do it individually, so please feel free to email me for her contact info.

Haven't used a trainer yet - I have a great physical therapist, but just joined Albany YMCA and it's fine. Affordable, relatively easy, generally the 40+ crowd. I think it was around $50/mo., no contract, etc., and you can use the Berkeley and Oakland Y too.

I highly recommend Jessica of Truly Madly Fit (https://trulymadlyfit.com). I've been working out with her since the spring and appreciate her gentle/firm approach--she's helped me build strength and has also taught me to listen to my body to rehabilitate after some injuries. I hadn't realized how far I had come with her until I saw a candid picture of myself last week--my legs were ripped!

Jessica works out of a small private gym on the Emmeryvile/Berkeley border--occasionally there is another trainer in the space with their client, but often it's just Jessica and me. Jessica offers 45 minute sessions and hour sessions--that flexibility helps me fit workouts in my schedule. Jessica will also help you find a work out buddy if you're interested in small group sessions (it's a great money saver). I work out 1:1 with her once a week and in a group with 2 other women once a week. It's nice to have both the individual customization and the group camaraderie. Lastly, Jessica is a hoot. She's always got something to talk about and puts me at ease. I like her!

Before I found Jessica, I tried to get a trainer at the Berkeley Y but it never worked out. They just never could find someone available (I work full time). I've had my Y membership on hold since the summer and think I may give it up. I'm sad to lose access to the Y's amenities, but now that my kids no longer need swimming lessons, there really isn't much drawing me there anymore.

  • Trainer for Elderly Parents

    Feb 16, 2024

Hi I'm looking for a trainer with experience working with elderly clients who could go to my parents' house in Moraga 1-2 times a week and give them each a little workout/training session. This may be in the form of light weights, fall prevention work, taking walks, dancing to music. I don't really know! Just want some support helping them to move more and build some strength.

    Any leads appreciated. Thank You

    Juliana

Hi Juliana, I highly recommend Dario Mathias. He works mainly with seniors and can address all issues you listed. His clients are mainly in Berkeley but he lives in pleasant hill, so maybe he can do a stop in Moraga. Dario is great with seniors - he did a ton of courses focusing on this population and customizes the program to the clients' special needs. Very friendly and very knowledgeable - he also has a bachelor degree on exercise science. His phone number is (510) 990-7163 / dariommp [at] hotmail.com

Jennifer with Location Trainers, 510-303-3328, would be perfect. I first hired her during the pandemic to work out with my teens at our home who had gotten a bit too sedentary, and when they went off to college, I kept her around to work out with me. She is not a buff, stacked, gym bro, she’s a real person who sometimes struggles with her own weight, and that’s what I love most about her. She gets me. She knows her stuff and is all about safety and making the workouts fun and interesting, so I can increase my flexibility and strength. Now that we know her well, working out with her is like chatting with a friend and it’s painless (mostly, lol). Highly recommend.

Jane Allen, Physical Therapist.  Lic #9518. 925-323-0748.  Jane lives in Orinda and worked with my mom (also in Lamorinda) from 2015-2018. She works specifically with the elderly and is wonderful. Not sure if she is still working, but if she is Jane is amazing. She worked one on one with my mom doing flexibility, strength training etc in my mom's private home, and then was the PT at the excellent small board & care home in Moraga after my mom moved there. Best to you and your folks.

I live in Moraga.  I used to see Tommy Au for personal training (pre-pandemic).  He now is at Higher Ground in Moraga, which is next to Sisi's Cafe, near the OSH.  highgroundmoraga.com  Higher Ground has a nice website and offers a variety of wellness/yoga/strength classes.  I'm taking yoga there now on Saturdays, but my main point is perhaps you could get in touch with Tommy and see if he is open to personal training at your parents' house.  He's fantastic.

My in-laws love Eric Swan. He comes to their house once a week to work on strength and mobility, probably other things too.

  • I'm looking for recommendations of a personal trainer who would be sensitive to the needs and limitations of an older body that is getting a bit creaky and needs strengthening along with some focused guidance on exercising. Thanks for your help!

Hello, reach out to Susan at Urban agility in Oakland. She is great with all ages, skill levels, injuries etc.. I don’t do personal training with her, but I attend her group classes where there are a handful of grandparents and older people. She is very attentive and modifies workouts to suit their needs

I work with Jesse Lezama, and he has some older clients that he works with. He's very aware of people's limitations, and doesn't try to get you to do things you are incapable of doing. He has a gym he runs out of his backyard, which comes with the added bonus of a very cute dog who works out with you!

Hi there! I love working with Nati Oron (aka PilateNati). She was a pilates trainer who added strength training to her arsenal. She offers both pilates and strength training (individually and in group settings) and is a great fit for older adults because of her understanding of the need for solid core strength and balance.

  • Personal trainer for a 70yo

    Sep 14, 2022

I'm hoping to build strength and endurance, etc. After a bicycle accident in June I've been very careful (read: lazy). Need to find someone positive and encouraging for a 70-year-old.

Send me a message if you’d like the contact info for my mom’s trainer (I don’t want to publish her info publicly without asking). She works with my 70 year old mom at my mom’s home in Berkeley, and has been a great help in building strength and balance, and tailoring the workouts to what my mom wants to work on.

Hi there, I'd recommend Drew Van Zee (drewvzee [dot] [com]). He's a personal trainer who uses a Z Health approach which in addition to the physical training emphasizes brain based tools to improve balance and strength and reduce pain. He's very encouraging and works with a lot of adults in the 60-80+ range.

    Good luck and enjoy!

  • My 69 year old mom wants to find a trainer to get her in shape for strenuous hiking and help her prevent injuries.  She's very wary of anyone who doesn't specifically work with aging bodies... And also would much prefer to have someone come to her house in Berkeley.  Would love recommendations!

Hi,  My Mom is 84 and Karah Charette at 716-997-1440 comes to her house to do exercises with her to help her with her walking.  Karah is a physical therapist and my Mom really likes working with her.  Good Luck!

Mary Rocha maryrocha79 [at] gmail.com has TONS of experience with older bodies (I'm 51 and on the younger end of her clientele), helping them grow stronger, recover from and prevent injury, go trail running – amazing. Her training room is completely private and conveniently located in North Berkeley. She does do home visits, too. I can't imagine working with anyone else – she's smart, sensitive, thoughtful, creative, kind, and brilliant at helping people move well.

Hi there, that's awesome that your mom is getting ready for strenuous hiking! I've worked with someone who may be a great fit. Drew Van Zee is a personal trainer who uses a brain based approach to help hiking enthusiasts improve their balance, become more mobile, and overcome pain. I know he has an online program and also works with people in person at Flex gym on Piedmont ave. Here's a link to his website: www.drewvzee.com  I've had improvements in both balance and strength from his work, and he does a lot of work with people in their 50s-70s. I hope he's a great resource for your mom!

Hi, my personal trainer works with a lot of older clients, including a client who is 90 and has Parkinson's.  She is great at adapting to the needs and abilities of her clients.  Her name is Nicole, 813.316.6635.  The best!

My trainer works with older adults.  I know she has had clients ranging up to 90 years old.  I hired her to help me keep my 50 plus body in working order so I can continue to hike and dance etc... She is terrific!  i appreciate that she can always come up with alternative exercises for any part we are working.  If something hurts, she'll have a good workaround.  Her name is Pam Grimm and you can find her at pamg [at] pamgfitness.com or 510.691.4527.

  • I am somewhat recently retired, and am in need of improving my old body.  I am looking for someone who can motivate and  guide me in losing weight, moving again within replaced joints limitations and chronic pain, and develop more energy.  Anyone know of a place and/or person who can help me?  Or, where I can find such a person?

I am a member of the 24-Hour Fitness in El Cerrito and there is a personal trainer on staff there who works specifically with older members, at all levels of fitness or lack thereof. Maybe all gyms have someone like this? The personal trainers go through a lot of training to get certified, so I would think they are pretty knowledgeable. Good luck!

Hi—would you consider joining a great group of mostly older women who work out on machines sized and designed for women. Many of us love this and it is keeping us fit and strong. It is a lot cheaper than a coach and social as well. Lots of great retired women work out. We are located in Rockridge.

Look for Dario Mathias, a personal trainer at Anytime Fitness on Solano Av (he can also see you at your own home). He is great with seniors - he did a ton of courses focusing on this population and customizes the program to the clients' special needs. Very friendly and very knowledgeable - he also has a bachelor degree on exercise science.

Carrie Villa is my personal trainer. She is wonderful.

She works mostly with women over 40's

  • I'm a 61 year old man looking for a personal trainer who specializes in working with older men/people.  I've been in good shape at different times, but have gained 20 pounds in the last few years and have several long-term injuries.  I live in El Cerrito, but would travel for the right trainer.  Any recommendations will be most appreciated.

I've been training with Holly at All-in-one Fitness in Albany for over two months. I'm in my late 40s and have noticed that she has several clients older than me. I've had a couple surgeries so I wanted someone that had a good knowledge of the body and would give me a good work out but be very careful. She's been great!

Tommy Au and his cousin Danny - they have a small studio in Moraga which is not that far (off commute hours).  Yelp "TDFitness" and you can see their reviews.  They work with everyone but several of their clients are older, they personalize.  Nice because it is usually just the client plus the other trainer's client.  Very supportive.

    Try Joe Ruiz - http://xfittrainingeastbay.com/trainers/

    xfit.jr [at] gmail.com (xfit[dot]jr[at]gmail[dot]com)

I used him prior to my wedding but he had clients of all different ages.  I worked out with him in El Cerrito and his prices were reasonable.

Personal trainer for active 60 year old

Nov 2012

I'm failing on my own to stay in shape and would love to work with a personal trainer and see what difference that makes. I'm early 60's woman, very active and in fairly good shape, and really want someone who understands my goals and challenges. anon

Simi Tufunga at Tufunga Team Training in Emeryville is not only awesome but very reasonably priced. The gym is cheap too and has a great vibe, very low key and real people. Ben

I highly recommend Dawn Miller. She is a fabulous personal trainer, has a lot of education and experience, and is great to work with. trainerdawnmiller [at] gmail.com maia

Harold Hatcher of H2Fitness is very experienced with training women of all ages, many of his clients are middle-aged to elderly. My mother, my husband and I have trained with him for a long time and we're all in much better shape than when we started. His studio is on 4th St. across from Spenger, in the bright pink building in the parking lot. His rates are reasonable and he is very personable - Call him at (415) 810-0814 or email: h2fitness701 [at] gmail.com - Michelle B.

Personal Trainer - coming out of hibernation

Feb 2010

I'm looking for a personal trainer who would be skilled at working with someone who is 60 and just getting back her health. I was formerly active in yoga but have had a long break from regular exercise due to a chronic illness that seems to be in remission now. The important thing is to find someone who won't push to the point of injury and relapse, yet will help me get back my strength. I'm able to go about all daily activities now and am cleared by doctor to start getting fit. A New Me

Aaron Holby 510 381 3107 is the trainer you want. I am 65, have been working with him twice a week for 3 years and during that time had a major illness that he helped me recover from. He also trains my partner, age 64, and helped her in recovery from spinal fusion surgery and total knee replacement. He's patient, gifted at tailoring exercise for the individual, and has a wonderfully dry sense of humor -- just what my overweight, exercise- phobic self needs to stay on a challenging program. I'm really pleased at what I've been able to accomplish and maintain. Feel free to email me if you want more details and I'll send you my phone number to talk. I found him on this network and others have recommended him as well -- he's in the archives. H.

I think I can recommend the perfect trainer for your needs. I am 55 and started working with Sando Endo two years ago prior to surgery (hysterectomy). I wanted to go into the procedure strong and recover stronger. I also have issues with my hip. We have used Pilates methods to improve my core strength and she has taught me how to achieve full body strength and proper alignment that has pretty much changed my life. Sandy knows her stuff, but what I appreciate most is her caring manner, gentle encouragement, and humor. I know that she is really listening to me, carefully observing my body, meeting me where I am each session, and expertly guiding me toward my goals. I can't recommend her highly enough. www.sandyendo.com sandy [at] sandyendo.com 510 590-6057 DB

A year ago, I started working out with Sandy Endo once a week. She is extremely knowledgeable, sensitive and kind. I love her sense of humor AND her ability to get me to do the things I need to do in order to feel better. I have noticed a huge difference in my energy level... and I my body is stronger. She combines many techniques and she really listens to what I need. Here is her website: www.sandyendo.com. Her e-mail is sandy [at] sandyendo.com

I've been working with Sandy Endo privately for a while now and can't say enough positive things about her. She genuinely cares about my well-being and manages to always strike the perfect balance between encouraging me to do the most I can while still staying very in tune with my limits and preventing any injuries. I feel great after every session, not just from the workout Sandy tailors for me but also from spending an hour with a truly kind soul. Sandy's contact info is www.sandyendo.com or 510-590- 6057. Good Luck!

I am sorry to say that I have to emphatically not recommend choosing a trainer at the Working Body in Oakland. I personally had a very bad experience with one of the trainers there, as have several other women that I have come into contact with (coincidentally.) Despite the fact that there are many female trainers there, the atmosphere is very macho and I did find the staff occasionally rude to the clients. (See Yelp review.) There are many other wonderful trainers in the Bay Area. Good luck to you! anon

I'm afraid I can't offer a specific trainer, but I had to write in reply to the poster who apparently had a terrible experience at the Working Body. In the year I've been going to Working Body (3-4 times/week for pilates, massage and chiropractic), I've had plenty of opportunity to interact with and observe the staff. They have consistently been friendly, helpful, and professional. I love the chiropractor there, and my pilates instructor is fabulous, but that said, I can't speak directly to the quality of the trainers. From my casual observation, it seems like there are definitely some 'macho' trainers (male and female), but the place itself never gave me that vibe. YMMV, I guess. Niki

Juliet at Juno Fitness http://www.junofit.com is absolutely the woman for you. I have been training with her for several years off and on and she has always been very intuitive about when to push me and when I need to back off. I have taken breaks from fitness training for major surgery, illness and family crisis and every time I come back she builds me back up slowly and carefully. I whine and complain constantly, yet her dedication and compassion never falters.

I don't usually post recommendations on BPN, but the description of what you were looking for in a trainer is exactly what Juliet can do for you. It's a small space, you get undivided attention and there are not a bunch of superjocks milling about to make you feel self conscious. Good for you for taking care of yourself! JunoFit Fan
