Spanish speaking program. Home made organic meals prepare daily, smoothies with lots of greens, grains, vegetables, fruits, raw nuts etc
lot of music,reading, art,
My daughter started going to Wawasi since October 2023 and we are very happy with the support and fun times all teachers and kids share together. Roxi, the director and all teachers were very supportive helped my daughter to get adjust to the social settings quite quickly. Although none of English or Spanish are our first language, my daughter enjoy going to her daycare everyday.
There are lots of engagement in the program, lots of singing, drawing and playing that supports children development. We also love they provide organic snacks and home made lunch. We also love flexible time options. Our daughter is in half-day schedule and we are able to pick her up at 12:30 pm instead of sharp 12:00 pm.
Teachers do really care little ones. They're nurturing, caring and engaging. Teachers were holding my daughter to make her feel comfortable during her first days was great. Highly recommended! 😘
Our son has been attending Wawasi for about ten months, and we are grateful to Roxy, the Director, and all the staff for their support in helping him and us joining and adjusting smoothly to the community. When he started Wawasi, we had been living in the USA for just three months, and we were glad we found a Spanish-speaking daycare where he could also start getting used to some English. After this time, he is ready to move on to TK, and we cannot be happier and more thankful to have chosen such a beautiful environment for him. Wawasi is a place where they promote respect and generosity; they provide healthy meals for the kids and are always mindful of any special nutrition needs; there’s a lot of play, music, and exposure to nature; and they listen and honor every child’s needs.
We will never forget Wawasi for being such a special place for our family as we faced the challenge of moving from our home country.
Try Wawasi in Albany? They speak Spanish with the kids, though not immersion, and serve healthy food. My kid ate vegetables there that he never ate at home. They’re mostly play based but I think they did do some basic letter and number stuff.
I love Wawasi, and am so glad we found it for my son. A lot of aspects of it made it easy and convenient, especially for working parents. They provide healthy (and mostly organic) breakfast, hot lunch, and snacks, which was a huge time saver for us, and we were glad to be comfortable that he wasn't being given junk food. The hours were flexible (we were able to pay a bit extra to pick up at 5:30 instead of 5), and the block it's on is quiet with plenty of parking. My son often enjoyed going for walks around the neighborhood before going home.
Even more important, he enjoyed a variety of activities - art projects, tons of time to play outside, weekly yoga and music, and even cooking! When it was hot they set up water play in the yard, and did other seasonal activities, like decorating pumpkins, in the fall. Our son was one of the younger ones, and the mixed age aspect seemed to work really well - we noticed a huge leap in his development after he started there - he started talking more, cleaning up his toys, and wanting to be more independent!
But by far the best part of Wawasi is the amazing director Roxana and the group of teachers! They are all warm, loving, nurturing, and have so much fun with the kids. They really went out of their way to make my son feel safe and welcome, especially as he adjusted in those first few days. It felt like he was being cared for in a big family rather than a "school." Very highly recommended.
There may be an opening in wawasi (just over the border in Albany) because we are leaving end of November. We LOVE the school and teachers, but got a spot at a place just a couple blocks from our house, which makes our commutes much easier. Happy to talk if you have questions!
Wawasi (in Albany, but just over the Berkeley border) provides a home cooked hot breakfast and lunch and two snacks. (I do not know if they discuss the tastes/textures as part of their food education.) Our son seems to eat more veggies there than he does at home.
We've been really happy with the school - the teachers are great and provide a warm environment that helped our son's transition from his nanny. The school is play based and mixed ages, but they do some basic letter recognition, etc, and also bring in outside music and yoga teachers every week. They also speak Spanish, but not exclusively. He gets tons of outdoor time and generally seems happy to arrive and reluctant to leave. (He's under two, so he doesn't tell us much.)
We love Wawasi and want everyone in the Berkeley/Albany community to know how excellent it is. You will not find an atmosphere as personal, or a team as genuinely devoted to your child's happiness, as Wawasi provides. In the one year our son was at Wawasi full-time (age 1 to age 2), he thrived emotionally, cognitively and socially, and even absorbed a lot of Spanish even though he is still on the cusp of speaking in sentences. They are not a "child care provider"--they are a loving community. As a Wawasi parent, you will feel your child is a part of their family. From the quality of the food served every day to the idyllic backyard garden, from the comfortable play and rest spaces, to the activities and projects: a yoga instructor! a harpist! Songs and dances to celebrate the seasons and holidays. Wawasi is a Spanish-immersion program, but as a non-Spanish speaking family ourselves, we never felt alienated by the Spanish orientation. The team is fully bilingual. Art projects for even the youngest children were a constant part of the program. Every day had a clear program of activities, and were thematically linked to one another. Wawasi's unique spirit is a function of its talented, ever devoted, and creative leader Roxy, a Peruvian woman whose joy in life and children is infectious. We were blessed to have her 20-year old daughter on the team, whose energy and temperament were exemplary. She has also employed other members of her family, a younger daughter and niece. We've thought so highly of her team that we continue to call on her niece for babysitting, because our son's attachment to her is still so strong after more than six months apart. Yureny and Leide are also incredibly strong, capable, kind and joyous members of the team. The whole team is youthful, flexible and resilient. She is also completely professional, completely trustworthy in all matters financial. The facility is safe and the block is calm and easy to park on. We were broken up when we left, and only left because we moved too far away to make it practical. We love the parents we met and will always hold Wawasi close to our hearts. For that reason, I urge you to check them out. Though their services are totally reasonably priced, a bargain really, Wawasi's team are the highest quality people you could want caring for your children, modelling behavior for them, and teaching them how to manage their own emotions, they reemotionally big-hearted and even-keeled. Wawasi is a true gem. Look no further.

We truly love Wawasi! My daughter has been there a little over a year, and we feel so lucky to have her there - she has never cried when I drop her off, and often doesn't want to leave when I pick her up. The teachers are incredibly loving and warm. They work hard to nurture mind, body, and spirit. They have a different theme each month (weather, mammals, the human body, etc) that the kids vote on. They then read books about the theme, do art related to it, etc. They serve the kiddos (mostly) organic food, all of which is super healthy and fresh. There are two outside music teachers and a yoga teacher who come each week, and the kids do art almost daily. There are 2 huge and lovely outdoor spaces (the backyard, filled with grass, a garden, and a large play structure; and the front yard with lots of toys) and the kids go outside every day, rain or shine. The teachers work hard to encourage compassionate and empowered communication and conflict resolution for the kids. And the teachers use both Spanish and English when communicating with the children, and my daughter has picked up quite a lot of Spanish. I was super picky when choosing a daycare, and toured a number of places - this was far and away the best fit I found. We are so grateful for Wawasi!
Our 3 year old has been going to Wawasi since he was almost two years old. If you are looking for a warm, nurturing, safe and fun environment for your child, you've found the right place. I never worry when I drop him off, which is saying something as I'm a bit of worry wart!
They have fun activities including yoga and music class everyday after circle time. Roxanna treats each kid like they are her own. I also love the staff. You can tell everyone enjoys their job, which is more than I can say for other preschools and daycares I visited. They have a ton of toys and activities as well as a big backyard with swing set, slide and garden. When it's hot they bring out the water toys and they kids run around in their bathing suits.
They serve hot organic and usually vegan breakfast lunch and dinner and its a Spanish emersion school.
I can't speak highly enough of how they care for the children and the sense of community between the parents. If you're looking for a family daycare, check it out!
Our son has been going to Wawasi since he was 18 months old. It is the perfect balance between nurturing day care and a teaching environment where kids can learn safely and get a good start in life. The owner Roxana and her two helpers are loving and caring and always have a smile and a happy face to welcome you. They provide a home cooked lunch and breakfast and nutritious snacks and smoothies throughout the day. Our son particularly loves the smoothies! They also have a regular teaching schedule like a preschool that teaches gross and fine motor skills, colors, shapes, etc, music lessons, yoga with an instructor, and of course, Spanish since it is also a Spanish immersion school. On top of it Roxana always keeps it new and interesting with ever changing themes and new things to learn, little parties for special occasions, or for no reason at all. It has been a great experience.
Our daughter has been going to Wawasi since she was 15 months old. We chose to keep her at Wawasi until kindergarten, because it is her family. Walking into Roxana's house is like walking into your Auntie's home. You will be welcomed with hugs and loving words, and you will smell something homemade and nutritious cooking on the stove. Children are well cared for, and they are taught how to be kind, loving, and accepting. The kiddos enjoy mostly organic snacks, smoothies and lunches daily. Roxana has two wonderful employees in addition to a yoga teacher and two music teachers who come in weekly. The facility has two play yards, one with a large play structure and vegetable garden. Oh, and did I mention that it is Spanish Immersion?!
Wawasi has openings for 5 kids this fall 2015 (starting in September - maybe some sooner). I highly recommend it. Our kid has been there for about a year. They do spanish immersian and provide healthy organic meals. they do music and yoga twice a week. they have a back yard with a play structure and garden. Also, as a special note, our child is probably transgender (at the age of 3 its not yet certain) and they have been incredibly accepting and supportive. They have between 9 and 14 kids depending on the day of the week, and have some kids that come for morning only. They open from 8-5:30. we love wawasi!!

We'd like to recommend Wawasi family daycare in Berkeley right at the Albany border near Marin and San Pablo Ave. Roxana and her staff offer warm and supportive care to a wide age range of kids. Our little one was there for about eight months before we had to find another place closer to our work, and it was a tough decision to leave. Wawasi offers an abundance of age-appropriate stimulation from puzzles and books to music and yoga to time to run around outside and burn off energy (Wawasi has both a large front and back yard, a rarity among most family day care). There are different themes each month that provide a focus for circle time and art projects (e.g., the sea, zoo animals, etc.). Roxana provides delicious and healthy meals for the kids -- her nutritious smoothies were a huge hit with our son. Staff speak primarily Spanish, so we shouldn't have been surprised when our son started to use Spanish words at home, which was great to hear. We were always so impressed with how positive Roxana and her staff are. Our son had some separation anxiety, and even on his worse days he was greeted and was treated with enthusiasm and smiles. JE

Wawasi is run by longtime Albany resident , Roxana Ferreira. Roxana and her employees give nothing but the most loving and attentive care to the children who attend. They provide nutritious snacks and meals, art, music and interactive play activities, all in Spanish. Wawasi inspires a love of learning and helps children cultivate loving friendships and communication/sharing skills. Wawasi has been a blessing to our family and community. Dear all, I am writing to highly recommend a preschool for children aged 2 and up. Our son, Daniel, attends this preschool for a year now, and we are very happy with it.
* First of all, the staff is very warm and loving \xc3\xa2\xe2\x82\xac\xe2\x80\x9c our son loves them, and we see that the other children feel the same. At these young ages, I think it is the most important factor.
* Second, the children have daily home-made organic food which is really great, with lots of fruit and vegetables (for instance, they have a smoothie with greens every morning, and our son loves it!).
* Third, the atmosphere is relaxed. The kids have music and yoga lessons, but it does not feel too intense. I feel it is a great program that combines learning letters, numbers and doing arts. With Daniel, we can see the progress he is doing with every packet of drawing of his that they give us once in a while. Also, the kids are exposed to Spanish as a second language.
* Fourth, The preschool has a wonderful backyard full of toys and they spend a lot of time in joyful play.
* Sixth, the hours are flexible (8am to 5pm for a full day, 8am to 12pm for part day, and I believe that combinations of these hours are possible). Also, there are not too many vacations.
* Seventh, there is a strong sense of community, with several parties and gatherings of the kids with the parents.
* Lastly, for UC village residents: it is within a walking distance from the village (at Cornell and Marin). For us it is very important when we're caught up at work and need a sitter to pick him up.
I will be happy to tell you more in person! Email me at irislavi at yahoo dot com.
Happy days, Iris

We are so grateful for Roxana Ferreira and her daycare, Wawasi Children's Center. Our older daughter went there for almost two years, and our younger daughter has been there for almost a year. Roxana is warm, loving, honest and extremely trustworthy, and she is supported by a staff of caring and reliable helpers. Wawasi is at Roxana'a home, in Albany, and the presence of her wonderful family members also enriches the experience for the children (and parents!).
Roxana and the staff make homemade, organic, healthy meals (breakfast and lunch) and snacks/smoothies for the children every day. Roxana is trained in the Montessori method and emphasizes motor development and practical skills such as folding, cooking, and cutting with scissors. She also loves to be silly with the kids and have lots of fun. Wonderful yoga and music teachers come each week to spend time with the children, and from time to time Roxana takes the children on field trips (e.g., to have music class at a home for elderly people). There is a large, grassy backyard with a vegetable garden, swing-set and plenty of space for play, and the children spend lots of time outdoors. Roxana, her helpers, and family speak Spanish to the children, which we love.
Roxana hosts potlucks and other gatherings for the families throughout the year and generally makes the daycare feel like a real community. We couldn't think more highly of Wawasi and recommend it without hesitation. Liza

My daughter went to Wawasi five days a week during the half-year that I was on sabbatical in Berkeley. It's a very warm, loving, supportive place, and my daughter loved it. Roxana organizes a diverse set of activities that are lots of fun and educational. She provides fantastic, nutritional (organic, vegetarian) meals. My daughter didn't speak a word of Spanish when she started, and now she peppers her chit-chat with Spanish phrases, and has really come to appreciate different languages and cultures, in part through her experience at Wawasi. I highly recommend Wawasi! A Grateful Parent

I HIGHLY recommend Wawasi Daycare in Albany. Run by Roxana Ferreira, Wawasi is a home based daycare that my child attended for the last two years. Roxana and her very capable staff have created a clean, well organized, stimulating environment for children where they spend their days exploring everything from art, yoga, cooking and the outdoors to world culture, music and language. I found the concept of parting with my young child (she started around 18 mos.) really difficult until I met Roxana. She made the transition smooth and comfortable for both me and my daughter. I'd be happy to answer anyone's questions regarding this wonderful program. You'd be lucky to have your children in Roxana's care.

I highly recommend sending your child to Wawasi Daycare. Roxana, the owner, is a very warm, dynamic woman with many years of experience as a preschool teacher. I send my two daughters, 2 and 4, and could not be happier. It is a very rich, magical environment for the little ones: their day includes yoga, music, art, fresh home-cooking with organic ingredients, storytime, circle time, show and tell, and bilingual Spanish. Roxana loves the kids and really knows how to work with each child at their own level.
The kids have two gardens to play in, including a huge back garden with a big play structure. The kids also go on treasure hunts around the neighborhood.
I have always felt very fortunate that my girls have their first experience outside of the home in the rich environment that Wawasi provides. I appreciate the strong community of parents, too. She loves to throw parties for the families and this past June she out-did herself with a recital.
Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. I'm happy to go into more detail. She is wonderful! Tamara

If you looking for a great care for your child, check a licensed daycare run by Roxana, a Montessori teacher. Her Wawasi daycare has a loving environment for kids. The children are play games, make art, eat homemade delicious (organic) meals and have indoors-and outdoors activities. Roxana speaks Spanish with the kids all the time. Roxana brings other teachers to play music, make art and yoga with children. For my daughter who has been almost five years with Roxana, Wawasi is a second home. Please call Roxana at 510 524 1396 or email her at roxanaferreirar [at] sbcglobal.net.

I would like to recommend a lovely family day care home in Albany, near North Berkeley. Roxana Ferreira, the main teacher, is Peruvian and speaks Spanish with the kids a lot of the time. She prepares wonderful meals for them, has great activities such as art projects, going to the library, or playing in her large backyard with lots of play structures. She also brings in other teachers, including a great music teacher on Friday mornings. We first discovered her when she taught at my older son's Montessori Preschool, so she brings that experience to her work. Now my daughter is in the same preschool but still goes to Roxana's one day per week because we don't want to miss out on the love and community she finds there.

We're new to Berkeley (4 months now) and we were so grateful to have found Wawasi daycare and preschool before we moved. I really couldn't do better than to reiterate the glowing reviews below and to say how wonderful Wawasi has been for our daughter. Although it is technically a daycare it really is run more as a preschool and most of the kids are preschool age (though they do take some younger ones as well). Roxana is a gem with a strong Montessori background. She strikes a great balance between fun, learning and discipline. I just wanted to add something from 2009 so BPN readers would know that Wawasi continues to thrive. Contact: Roxana Ferriera, 510 524 1396

If you live in North Berkeley or Albany and love to have a warm and creative caregiver for your little one, you may want to check Roxana Ferreira. Shes a Montessori teacher who works part time in a school and has her own licensed daycare called Wawasi in her home. My son, whos now very well adjusted in preschool still loves to visit Wawasi that seems to us like a big family. The children, babies and older kids are most of the time together and enjoy games, craft, homemade delicious (organic) meals and snack, indoors-and outdoors activities, little field trips, and if they stay in the afternoon nap quietly after lunch. The children are also exposed to Spanish thanks to Roxana and her assistants who by the way are performing artists from Peru. We also really appreciated that our son was not only taken care from women but also a wonderful, very caring man. If you want to know more about Wawasi and Roxana Ferreira, please call 510 524 1396 or email her at roxanaferreirar [at] sbcglobal.net

My almost 5 year old daughter attended Wawasi daycare in Albany from 2 to 3.5 yrs old and still talks about how much she loved it. It is a wonderfully nurturing place that was a great transition from being home with me to now a more school based nursery school. Roxana Ferriero is the owner and lead day care provider and under her care my daughter was played with, loved and taught to do many things for the first time. She learned some of her first words in spanish and was helped along to go the bathroom at Wawasi. I really liked how homey the environment was and play based all the activities are. Roxana always puts the children first and showers them with love. Not to mention the wonderfully home cooked meals she prepares every day. I feel strongly that this first place of social interaction was a great building block for my daughter's social ness and happiness today.

I am writing to recommend Roxana Ferreira, owner of Wawasi Day Care in Albany. She has created a warm, loving environment where the kids are happy and carefree. She is lively and fun. Roxana cooks all the kids food and they eat things they won't touch at home. Our daughter has thrived in her care. She has a unique ability to make each child feel they are her favorite. We are so happy that our daughter had the best care and we felt safe leaving her every day. Please email me with any questions.

Re: Bilingual preschools
Wawasi home based preschool has been a second home to my two daughters. Roxana Ferreira's loving, nurturing care and guidance, warm community feel, nutritious mostly organic breakfast and lunch, sweet safe atmosphere, playful educational learning environment... I completely and wholeheartedly recommend this school. My kids miss her when they're away from school. She has openings now. Call her at 510-524-1396 or email her at roxanaferreirar [at] sbcglobal.net

We give Wawasi, a daycare run by Roxana Ferreira, our highest recommendation. We've had our kids there for 2 years. This is a daycare that is a preschool, with circle time, music class, and organic homemade food that the kids love. My boys eat things there that they won't at home, including many vegetables and fruits. Roxana fosters community by throwing holiday parties for the families and kids. My oldest is speaking Spanish as well as English, and loves it. The kids play in the beautiful yard with swings, slides, cars, apple trees, and a garden, go on weekly field trips to the library and picnics in the park on nice days. The kids learn through having fun there. When I go to pick them up, instead of just wanting to leave, they want to show me the art project they did, the apple they picked, or the toy they're playing with. We feel so blessed that our family has Roxana and her family in our lives.

If you are looking for daycare in the North Berkeley/Albany area I strongly recommend you to call Roxana Ferreira and arrange a visit to her home-based daycare, Wawasi Children's Center. Our daughter and son have thrived under her care for the past 2 years. She is a natural caregiver who makes a tough job look easy. Roxana and her loving assistants are nurturing, incredibly musical and remarkably patient with all types of children. They incorporate art, music, nature, Spanish and trips to the library into a loosely structured, play-based environment. Lastly, Roxana is skilled in the kitchen and provides delicious and nutritious meals for the kids. Wawasi is truly our home-away-from home. Roxana can be reached at roxanaferreirar [at] sbcglobal.net or by phone at 510-524-1396. Feel free to contact me as well.

Our daughter was under the care of Roxana and her incredible team (her mother and several staff, all originating from Peru) for the last 1.5 years and we could not have been luckier. The Wawasi environment is filled with fun, music, art, dancing and Montessori learning in English and Spanish. Wawasi also provides ORGANIC AND HEALTHY food all day! We never had to pack a meal and our child ate things there she would never eat at home. Roxana has a sizable back yard with play structures and fruit trees. My only complaint is that our daughter had so much fun it was hard to get her to leave at the end of the day. Hours: Monday - Friday from 8am - 5pm. Phenomenol location for easy on/off access to the Marin ramp. She takes kids of all ages. I'm surprised that she has any openings right now, if you are looking for a fantastic, warm and loving daycare, please contact her to see if she still has any availability. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them.

My 4 1/2 yr old daughter has been attending Roxanna Ferreiras preschool in Albany for a year now. I cannot recommend this preschool highly enough. The Pervian woman Roxanna who runs it (along with her mother and Peruvian assistants) are all wonderful, loving caretakers and teachers. My daughter has a great time doing art projects, singing songs, learning Spanish (as they speak to the children in Spanish as well as English) through fun songs and games and playing in the large back yard and on the playstucture there. Roxanna and her mother have both taught at a local Montessori school for many years so they are both schooled in this method as well. My daugther was very used to being with me when she first attended, so was a bit clingy, but there was always some loving adult to hand her right too so i always walked away feeling totally confindent that she would get the attention she needed until she could adjust. Which she has done beautifully. She loves the other wonderful kids and enjoys eating the nutritous, organic, breakfast and lunch and snacks all provided as part of the fee. Roxanna always has lots of parties to celebrate birthdays and holidays of every kind. The hours there are 8am - 5pm. I plan to have my daughter remain there until she starts kindergarten. The school takes children through age 5 yrs. Roxannas phone number is: 510 524-1396 or email her at: roxanaferreira [at] sbcglobal.net

Looking for a daycare in Albany? This daycare has fantastic caregivers who bring warm and loving environment. The daycare offers the good quality Spanish and art program. At the end of each week my three years daughter brings home drawings, painting, and mixed media projects. A month ago, the teachers prepared a lovely show with children. The children sang songs and danced with two musicians: the drummer and the guitarist. We had a great time, and great opportunity to see how much fun our children had. I know that this daycare will soon have an opening. Hurry up! If you need more information email Roxana at roxanaferreirar [at] sbcglobal.net

Roxanna is a wonderful, liscenced (up to six children) daycare provider who works out of her home. She speaks Spanish and English, and does lots of wonderful activities with the children--artwork, walking to the Albany library, going to parks, playing, cooking, etc. She is an excellent childcare provider and has lots of experience taking care of children in her home and also at a pre-school where she works part-time (Garden Day Montessor). I cannot recommend her enough. She is warm, loving and very creative. She is looking for 3-4 additional kids on a regular basis. She also provides a delicious, warm lunch for the kids!

I would like to recommend a family day care in North Berkeley that has current openings.
The care is available from 8-5 Monday to Friday for children age 2 and up. Roxana, the main care provider is VERY loving and warm. She has experience teaching in a pre-school and provides wonderful, healthy breakfasts, lunches and snacks which she prepares for the kids.
Activities include arts and crafts, walks to the library and local playgrounds, lots of reading, and there is a great big backyard with lots of toys. Roxana also speaks some Spanish with the children, and focuses on learning through play.
My son is in a Montessori school where she has taught, and he attended her program over the summer and we and he loved it.

Roxana's family daycare is called Wawawazi, from a Quechua word for baby. Roxana is a warm, fun, enthusiastic wonderful childcare provider with a homecare license and experience as a pre-school teacher. My now Kindergarten son still asks to go visit her every week! She takes children from age 2 to 6. Her home is comfortable with a large back yard with fruit trees and playhouses. She offes yummy home-cooked nutritious meals and lots of love and fun. She has openings now. Contact: Roxana Ferreira, roxanaferreirar at sbcglobal.net 510-526-1396

Roxana just got her license, but is not new to caring for children. She has been a substitute teacher at my daughter's preschool, and has cared for her a couple of days/week over summer break. She is the mother of two (ages 2 and 6?) and speaks English and Spanish.
Roxana takes children ages 2 and up. She prepares good food for the children and interviews each parent about what food they want for their children and what TV/videos, if any, are ok for them to watch, i.e. a parent might say PBS material only, or no video. (I think she said 30 minute max video time a day regardless of parent criteria.)
My daughter loves to go to Roxana's house, which has a large back yard with lots of interesting play areas. They also visit local parks and other places of interest, and do art and food projects and play games.
