  • Hello,

Has anyone had any recent experience with this program? Is there a particular structure or is it just monitored free play? How many children are typically in the class and how many caretakers? Thanks!

Nov 2014

Hi everyone! Has anyone sent their little ones to Berkeley Parks and Rec's ''Tots Around Town'' program at Live Oak Park. It seems like a really neat program, and I was just looking for general feedback. Thanks for your help! ZO

My son did Tots around Town for a year before preschool. It's a nice program for providing a little social interaction and play time for the kids and a break for the parents. In a way it is quite informal -- the women who run the program are very nice, but quite young and I don't know if they have early education certifications or anything like that. But they usually organize some kind of art project, there is always a snack (brought by one of the parents) and the rest of the time the kids play inside and sometimes outside if the weather is nice. My son still occasionally refers to the time he spent at Tots and it seems he has fond memories of it. anon

Tots Around Town is hands-down the best-kept secret around for free, fun toddler play. I wish I knew about it earlier in my children's lives. I have only been to the MWF one (different location than TTh) but my son loves it. It is basically open-play in a gym, with a wide variety of toddler-appropriate toys, balls, puppets, books, cars, etc. It is well-attended but not too crowded (though I hope it stays that way after the publicity here!) and it appears to be a mix of nannies and parents. There is one staff member minding the shop, but it's not facilitated. Finally, there is a playground just outside if you reach your fill of being indoors. It's all great. Happy Mom of 2
