  • Hi! Has anyone had good experiences at Millie Clinic + Alta Bates recently? I've heard UCSF can be a better places for higher-risk pregnancies and if things go wrong, but the difference in commute time -- 10 minutes vs. 25-60 minutes depending on traffic -- would be significant.

Unclear if you are high risk? If so, would without hesitation recommend UCSF. If not, then you could probably be just fine with Alta Bates or Millie. If things get high risk later on for whatever reason you could always transfer later on to UCSF.

I had a very good experience with Millie, especially Talia Borgo. I wasn't really a high risk pregnancy but I'd had some complications in my first pregnancy as well as a second pregnancy I had to terminate that probably made me higher risk than average. Talia was fantastic. They supported me through some pretty hard stuff and were a joy to see as I saw them throughout my pregnancy.

I also delivered at Alta Bates both times and had a great experience (or as great experience as you can have with childbirth!). Good L&D nurses as well as post partum staff.

I had a baby with Millie in October! I have lukewarm feelings about my experience with Millie, but actually loved my birth at Alta Bates and would absolutely deliver there again. They were super respectful & supportive of my birth plan and all of the nurses I interacted with were kind, competent, and has great communication with both me & my husband. Their labor & delivery unit has an excellent reputation & outside of a pre-diagnosed high risk condition I don't think there would be any significant benefit to going over to UCSF.

I chose Millie because of their emphasis on holistic care & the fact that I'd have a Millie midwife at my birth. All of the offerings outside of the standard prenatal visits & 3 Guide sessions are not covered by insurance, which was a barrier to access for me. They also schedule you with a different midwife for every appointment, which means you don't get the chance to build a relationship with any one provider. Some midwives were great and some I really did not have a positive experience with—for my next birth I will be seeking care with a practice who allows me to see the same provider throughout my pregnancy, even if that means they won't be present at my birth.

Happy to answer any more specific questions you may have!

I heard the same. I just had my baby at Alta bates and was going to Millie. It was my first pregnancy and can’t really compare the experience. I had a low risk pregnancy at 36 years old and ultimately had an unplanned c section. I like Millie beacause they are midwives and I always trusted them, that they were prioritizing my birth experience. So even though I didn’t get the unmedicated vaginal birth I wanted, I don’t feel like I was pressured into the c section I ended up having. I didn’t look into their other services they like therapy, lactation consultants, classes, etc…those seemed a bit pricey.

All the nurses were amazing at altabates. The only bummer was I happened to go into labor on a day where the ward was full, so I wasn’t able to get wireless monitoring and I had to stay near the bed the whole time.

Hey - personally, I had a really rough experience at Millie. It’s a start up so logistical issues can be a nightmare. I only worked with them briefly but I thought the midwives were very good.

If you are truly high risk (not just high risk because of your age), Millie likely can’t see you because midwives can only provide low risk care so ucsf would be a better fit.

That being said, I have not experience care at ucsf. I’ve heard their high risk OB doesn’t have great bedside manner but generally ucsf is a great place to birth.

I had a great experience with Millie / Alta Bates, with an initially moderate-risk pregnancy (AMA, IVF) that ended up having some complications in the end.  My baby thankfully was born completely healthy and didn't need any NICU time, so I can't speak to that aspect, but I felt like I received really high-quality care from the Millie team.  Without them, my gestational hypertension (which I had to be induced for) could have easily developed into full-on preeclampsia.  I had a very lengthy induction process as I really, really wanted to avoid a C section and they were supportive of letting me proceed even though I was technically a bit "past the clock" in terms of my water breaking.  It was a good balance of them giving me the options and their recommendations but leaving it up to me to make the ultimate decisions.  And I was ultimately able to avoid a C section that I think most other providers would have forced on me under the circumstances.  The Millie team, Alta Bates nurses, and my doula were all really collaborative throughout the process.

For me, it was similar commute difference and I was very happy that I was nearby as I ended up going to the hospital/clinic 2-3x a week at the end when I got flagged for high-risk monitoring, and we went back and forth several times when I was in labor as I wanted to be at home during the early phase of the induction - and even a 10 minute drive feels long when you're having contractions.

After delivery, the "upstairs" Alta Bates postpartum experience was not so great, but I think it was still worth it for Labor & Delivery (and you hopefully don't spend that long in postpartum room anyway).

  • Do any families here have experience with Millie Clinic? We're trying to choose a pregnancy and delivery provider and would love to hear about your experience!

I've seen them for 2 pregnancies. I think overall they're great. I've mostly seen Talia who I adore. She was especially great during a very difficult circumstance in my first pregnancy.

I think you get a *lot* relative to what you pay -- it's more or less what's offered by very expensive midwifery clinics. I don't know how long they'll be able to offer all that they do for free (e.g. postpartum home visit, doula appointments during your pregnancy) but for now it's great. The office is really nice and the staff is super friendly. They've also hired a bunch more people and are now able to admit at Alta Bates as of this month (so that if you deliver there you will almost certainly see a Millie midwife).

I think they're getting busier so it got harder to schedule with Talia, which was the downside of their becoming more popular.

I started going to Millie at 8 weeks and it’s been a great experience so far. Due end of Feb and have loved all the midwives I’ve met. You also meet once a month with a doula and they care about both the mom and baby!

Couldn't recommend them enough - we were choosing between UCSF and Millie and are so grateful we went with Millie as our care provider. The level of service, attention, and care is truly what all care providers should aim for. They never rush us out of appointments, are communicative, helpful whenever we have had questions, and the additional classes you can take are informative. They also provide something called a Millie Guide, who you meet with 3x throughout your pregnancy to answer questions and walk you through current trimesters. I'm 35 weeks, so haven't yet delivered, but it's comforting knowing our midwife will be with us when we do deliver at Alta Bates. Hope that helps!

I have only done a couple consultations with them when I was looking for a provider to support my 2nd pregnancy. The midwife I met with seemed pretty warm and friendly, but I got the impression they are still figuring some things out. But that is solely my opinion. Additionally, their midwives just got privileges to deliver at Alta Bates for labor and delivery as of 11/1. Before this, they only did the prenatal and postnatal care... but did not make that clear from their marketing and initial free consultations :-/. Hope that intel helps!

I had an uncomplicated pregnancy and transferred to Millie in my second trimester, and thought it was fabulous. I wanted the wholistic care of a midwife; I liked that you can easily rotate through different midwives at the practice (to get a second opinion, or if the personality match isn’t right), or stay with the same person. Everyone I saw there took the time to really listen, and gave actionable advice. I liked the virtual visits for appointments that didn’t have a physical aspect, because getting out of the house became challenging for me. Something unique they have is the Millie Guide, who is a birth worker (with doula and lactation experience) you meet (video call) with several times to make a birth plan, and who you can text/email any questions along the way. I loved my Millie Guide, she made the whole experience for me. She provided emotional support, evidence based info and experiential wisdom, and valuable educational material that worked perfectly with my learning style (pre-recorded birth class, and newborn care class). Millie also organises in-person classes if you prefer, but I didn’t take them (again, I had trouble leaving the house). With Millie, you deliver at Alta Bates, which I thought was a good hospital with modern practices (I recommend taking an in-person tour beforehand with your partner to rehearse getting to the delivery floor). Lastly, the postpartum follow-through with Millie was exceptional. Birth isn’t the end; the first 2 months postpartum were very rough, and Millie sends a nurse with lactation expertise to your house to check on you after a week, and then a couple weeks later follows up with a virtual checkup (which I appreciated since I was in no condition to leave the house). That checkup detected some complications I wouldn’t have received care for otherwise. The midwives there also really advocate for your postpartum recovery, and helped me get in with pelvic floor physical therapy. I felt cared for as a person, and my autonomy was respected. This was my first pregnancy/birth so I can’t compare it to a different clinic, but I don’t know what more I’d ask for.

Not direct experience with Millie, but in 2022 we hired their in house LC Ellen Schwerin shortly before she joined them. We didn’t have the greatest experience with her and would not recommend her to new parents, especially queer parents, though she wears an LGBTQ+ ribbon. While her advice was grounded in obvious experience, her bedside manner left us in tears more than once. On day 4 postpartum, she told my wife that she was “biologically irrelevant” in terms of lactation and that her sole job was to keep nosy visitors at bay. Technically correct, yes, but an insensitive thing to say to two sleep deprived, emotionally wobbly new mothers already anxious about bonding with their baby. We gave feedback and she did attempt to be more inclusive at the next visit, which was appreciated.

  • Hi all - anyone currently pregnant and considering care at the new Millie clinic in berkeley? Their wholistic care narrative resonates nicely with the pre (and post) natal care I'd like for my second pregnancy and am considering switching to Millie particularly since my first pregnancy was thankfully uncomplicated. However the lack of reviews on this very new clinic does make me worry, in addition to the fact that any new practice is bound to have some wrinkles in their workflow and I'm hesitant to be a guinea pig for their business structure. Any feedback from those with experience at Millie would be greatly appreciated!!

I am at Millie for my 3rd pregnancy (my first I did at Sutter, my second I did at Millie but terminated, and now I'm in my 2nd trimester of my 3rd pregnancy and am at Millie). Happy to chat about my experience but I like the clinic/staff/experience, especially Talia Borgo. Appointments are on time, they're really easy to get a hold of/schedule with, and you don't feel rushed.

I was seen at Millie clinic and had a great experience. They are very thorough, thoughtful, and approach things with data. The appts are not rushed and the care is attentive. Some workflow hiccups such as delayed appt start times and understanding what was included in postpartum appt. Nothing that would cause me to not rec them or that other clinics are immune to. They are very open to feedback as well. Highly recommend them.

RE:

Millie Clinic is fantastic. Small, personal clinic. Focus on low-risk pregnancies. There may be a waitlist now but believe the just hired another midwife. They do deliveries at Alta Bates in Berkeley.

I had the same experience with Sutter (though I liked my OB, but I couldn't handle the late appointments, etc.). I ended up going to Millie in Berkeley. I've been seeing a midwife there (Talia Borgo) but I believe they have an MD on staff too. So far very professional, responsive, easy to schedule, etc.

RE:

I have a cousin who switched from Sutter to a new clinic in Berkeley called Millie clinic (https://www.millieclinic.com/) and she has been very happy with their care, commenting that she wished she had seen them from the beginning. I called them today for a consultation and they were able to book me for tomorrow, I think that is a hopeful sign they are not overwhelmed and are also responsive. Good luck and congratulations!
