Seeking non-religious, inclusive scout type organization
–Sep 19, 2021Hello,
My kindergartener is very interested in nature, hiking, and animals. We went to a cub scouts info session and he was interested in joining. However, I am concerned about being a part of an organization that does not have more firm anti-discrimination policies (the troop we looked into does, but BSA allows religious-based troops to exclude LGBTQ members), as well as the scout oath requiring a pledge to serve god, as we are atheists.
I love the community service and respect for nature, as well as the fun of scouting, but am less enthused about the other aspects. I’ve looked into various other scouting organizations but haven’t actually found any groups in the nearby area - we are in San Leanrdo, close to the Oakland border.
Any leads? We’d also be interested in a Universalist Unitarian based scouts group, as they actively engage the scouts in becoming more progressive and don’t require a religious oath.
Thank you for any help!Sep 19, 2021Boy scout vs Girl scout activities and time commitment
–Sep 7, 2017I have a boy and a girl and am looking at boy and girl scout programs. Anyone know the time commitment for a parent with elementary school kid in boy scout and girl scout? Based on what I read online, it seems boy scout is less time consuming, less focus on fundraising (no dreaded cookie sales), and is more active, but my sources could have been biased. I am looking for a fun activity, with minimal parental time commitment required and that my kids will enjoy. I hate (and I use such a strong word rarely) direct sales and part of me hopes my girl decides against girl scout just so that I can avoid the cookie sale season. I heard it takes over people's lives -- but I never found out the consequences of not participating in the selling activities if she decides to join -- anyone knows? I'm leaning towards having my boy join boy scout and having my girl skip on joining and just attend her brother's boy scout events since at the cub level I was told families and siblings were invited for the larger trips (i.e. camping, etc). I guess at this point I'm looking at information to decide if these scout groups are worth it, would be fun for the kids, and are something I can handle on top of an already very busy life?
Sep 7, 2017Multipurpose room for Girl Scout sleepover event?
–Aug 24, 2017Hi BPN community,
I'm a troop leader for girl scouts in oakland and we are trying to figure out where to hold a sleepover nearby. Nearby would involve Berkeley or Oakland. Please let me know if you know of who to reach out to. We are a new troop and do not have a lot of funds, so it would need to be low-cost or donated for our event. I'm happy to share more about the troop and what we are seeking to do.
Thank you so much!

Aug 24, 2017Where can Scout troop have Sunday meetings?
–Jan 7, 2017Hello BPN community! I am looking for a space for our new girl scout troop to meet, somewhere in north oakland. The challenge is that we are hoping to meet on Sunday afternoons (twice a month) and have discovered that Sundays are tricky for finding meeting spaces. Libraries and rec. centers are largely closed. I am not affiliated with a church, but not closed off to the idea of meeting at one. Whether a church or a business, we are hoping to find someone willing to let us use their meeting space, fee rental waived. A room large enough for around 30 people would be great, bigger or smaller also okay. Somewhere with fairly easy parking and on the North Oakland region. Our troop will meet to allow girls (2nd and 3rd grades) to build leadership skills and make plans to do community projects. Our troop will also raise funds to donate to local organizations. Please let me know if you think you can host us or if you know who we can contact. Thank you for your help!!

You may want to try a Venturing Crew. There is one in Piedmont, Oakland, and Alameda. It is a coed group, related to Boy Scouts of America. Very open and accepting. Lots of quirky teens find their niche here. Lots of mentoring and responsible leadership from the adults and older kids. I think they welcome 14 through 20 year olds. https://beascout.scouting.org
Hi,
My daughter sounds similar. About a year ago we joined an all girls Berkeley Scouting troop. The kids did not already know each other, but everyone seems to get along just great! They are into going camping and even short backpacking trips so they have a lot of adventures. We camped overnight on Angel Island last weekend. They also do other activities like ice skating and service events. Honestly, my daughter isn't that interested in the scouting part. She seems to go mostly for the cameraderie. However, she is definitely learning some skills along the way. There is also a lot of opportunity for leadership experiences. The girls are in grades 6-11. Here is a website about the troop. https://troop42berkeley.com/
The troop is looking to expand.
Outdoor Service Guides. I'm interested in setting up a local troop. The Oakland Troop is on hiatus. I'm not sure how to move forward with the organization. https://bpsa-us.org/join-us/
Moderators may put us in touch. My child is 8.
Hi - the YMCA runs a program called Adventure Guides, for fathers and their children.
Hi Cozy,
We are an atheist family involved in cub scouts and it is working for us. Most of the other scouts and pack leaders are not religious either. The pack doesn't discuss religion or faith at all and encourages families to interpret the "duty to god" as we see fit. My family discusses how "God" means many things around the world and throughout history and for us it is just a reminder to think about and stick to our values. Scouts who want to work on the duty to god badges do so at home with their families, not with their troop. We have had some sweet moments with our family talking about what is important to us, and we learned that our son had some pretty deep thoughts. Another family takes a more scholarly approach and learns about world religions together. (The flag ceremonies and pledge of allegiance have been similar for us - a chance to discuss whether these symbols are meaningful and the difference between trying to make your country a better place vs. blind "patriotism".) We were also concerned about the discrimination angle, but we felt better when we learned that the Berkeley scouts have long been active in advocating for change within the larger organization and heavily emphasize inclusivity. It's the first word in the pack's website description: https://www.berkeleypack30.org/
Happy to discuss more if you would like! Their Facebook page also has more info and photos. https://www.facebook.com/BerkeleyPack30/ Good luck finding the right place!
I remember when I asked this question. The sad truth is that there isn't anything similar that I found so my son didn't get to have the experience. If he had asked to do it we would have let hi. But it wasn't a big deal at his school.
Can't believe nobody has suggested 4-H!
