Transfering from private middle school to public, mid-8th grade
I know this may seem like a surprising decision, but after much consideration, we’re transferring our child from private school to King Middle within the next few weeks. The reasons are varied—ongoing unaddressed bullying, high turnover of teachers and students, and a lack of preparation for public high school, just to name a few. They attended public elementary school in BUSD, so they’re familiar with the system and have a few existing friendships, which helps. We’re curious if anyone has feedback about being the “new kid” at King or if anyone has gone through a similar transition. We’re already fully committed to Berkeley High, so we’re focusing on the positives of getting a head start in re-adjusting to the public school culture. Thanks in advance for any insights!

My kids both transferred to King after attending a private school since kindergarten. One switched for 8th grade and the other at the beginning of 7th and both attended Berkeley High afterwards. Both loved King! This was a long time ago as my kids are now aged 25 and 30, but I think it's still relevant. It served as a great way to transition to Berkeley High as they had a solid friend group to begin high school with, already in place. Advice your kid to find a school club that looks interesting. I think your kid will do fine!
