Sports Injury Physical Therapist
Hello,
My 10 yr old daughter is a competitive basketball player. She recently suffered an injury (sprained/ torn tendons in 3 places in her leg) at a game and had to be on a cast for 4 weeks. We are with Kaiser and the recovery process has been a moving target. First it was 4-6 weeks, then 6-8 weeks, then another 1 month and now could be 3-6 months. We are really frustrated with Kaiser's Physical Therapy sessions as well. My daughter is an athlete and all the tests they give her are too easy yet we don't get a straight answer. We are looking for Physical Therapist that deal with sports injury in young athletes that play competitive sports. I appreciate your referrals.
Thanks so much!

Howdy parent of 10 yr old basketballer! There's a lot missing or that I don't know about your situration with Kaiser (primary care doc?), but see if you can get an appointment with Dr. John Cummings, a sports medicine / orthopedic doc who works out of Oakland Kaiser. 510-752-1155 I've seen him for a couple of different injuries over the years, and each time, he's been great. He listens. He lays "hands on" to help figure out what he's dealilng with. And if you explain the challenges you're having with PT, he can help draft a game plan and make a good referral to a PT who will come up with a good therapy plan.
Once upon a time I broke an ankle while trail running in the Berkeley hills. I spent time in a non-weight-bearing cast, then a walking cast, for a total of 8 weeks. After that, between the atrophy and stiffness in my ankle and foot, I needed PT that lasted longer than the actual time for bone healing in cast! Who knew?!?
Sorry this has gotten challenging for you; working through the Kaiser system can be its own challenge. Good luck!
The Young Athlete’s Clinic at Children’s Hospital is great! Not sure that’s the exact name, but if you call CHO, they should be able to route you there.
