Preschool start in January/mid year in East Bay

Hi everyone, we're thinking about taking the kids abroad for a few months where we can find help with the younger one and come back around Jan. My older one will be 3 yo by then and need to go to preschool since we cannot handle two kids at home. Has anyone gone through this? Is that difficult to find a preschool in Jan or mid year and do you have any advice for us? Thanks!

I think our preschool (Temple Sinai in Oakland) has historically welcomed kids mid-year if there's space.

I don't know for sure, but our school The Berkeley School is always having kids start mid-year. I'm not sure exactly how that is arranged but I'm sure they would answer any questions. We are very happy there and I think in general preschools are a bit under-enrolled at the moment with the coming of public pre-K.

Hi! We literally just did that, we left for Barcelona in July when my daughter was almost  3 and my son 6months and will be coming back to Berkeley this Jan. We toured/visited 4 preschools (just to have more options in case some where full in Jan), talked about our situation with the staff and where advised to apply during the regular application times (february i think) and then to reach back towards the end of the year to see if there where any spots available for Jan.
We did and she’s all set to start in the new year. To be fair, the school is a newish branch of an existing preschool (Little school) elsewhere so they are still ramping up their numbers, but it was the one we liked the most anyways! 🤷🏽‍♀️

Try Bloomers in Oakland. My son attended but we moved. Super loved the environment!
