Looking for a great piano teacher

Hi all,

Our 10 year old son seems to have a natural talent for piano, but we're not sure his current teacher is the right fit. Looking for someone who can really push him forward, especially with learning to read music and giving him the opportunity to participate in formal recitals.

We'd prefer to have someone come to our home to teach but open to bringing him somewhere, particularly in Berkeley.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Caitlin

Golden Key Piano School, on University and MLK. They have lots of teachers, so you can find a good personality fit. But the whole school is geared towards a duet recital in the fall and a solo recital in the spring. They also teach music theory and sight reading. My son has been going for 3 years now and we've been pretty happy with it.

Linli Wang at Crowden is all of those things. You would have to go to Crowden for lessons, but she is an incredible teacher, especially for gifted kids. My child has been taking lessons with her for almost six years. Many of her other families are long term as well. Can’t recommend her highly enough.

For those of you looking for a piano teacher for your kids, I can’t recommend Luz enough!

I spent months searching for a bilingual Spanish-English piano teacher for my 10-year-old daughter, and I’m so grateful we found Luz. Originally from Argentina, Luz brings a warm and vibrant energy to every lesson. For over a year now, she has been coming to our home weekly—always punctual, friendly, and full of enthusiasm. Our daughter absolutely loves her lessons and looks forward to her time with Luz every week.

What makes Luz truly special is her background in child therapy combined with her deep knowledge of music, sound, and piano. She has an incredible ability to meet kids where they are, adjusting her teaching style to fit their needs. I love how she makes learning fun and engaging, using creativity, movement, and even songwriting alongside teaching the fundamentals. Instead of the dry, drill-sergeant style lessons I remember from childhood, Luz fosters a genuine love for music.

Our daughter has been thriving under her guidance, learning naturally and eagerly wanting to explore more. Honestly, if I had the time, I’d take lessons from Luz myself! If you're looking for a patient, creative, and inspiring piano teacher who truly connects with kids, Luz is the one.
