IPE deck restoration
Hi, I am looking for someone to refinish/seal our 2 year old IPE deck. Would also appreciate any thoughts from those that own IPE decks in terms of care recommendations. Thank you!

Ipe is extremely durable, water/rot-&-fire resistant. Our Ipe deck is over 20 years old, and we simply let it age naturally to a soft gray color. While you could periodically sand and stain it to keep it looking new, I don't personally think it's work the time, money, and, frankly, unnecessary "products" which may not be so environmentally friendly.
Our ipe deck is over 10 years old. We never stained it and it still looks fabulous.
One note... The handrail is also of ipe which does get some mossy crud. Three times we have had people come to clean the handrails. Twice hand scrubbing and that was fine. One person said pressure washing would be good. It was not. It disrupted the surface and resulted in splinters.
Since your deck has been stained, I don't know how hard/feasible it would be to go back to natural. For other readers, I've been ecstatic with the appearance and low maintenance.
A year ago, I got my 15-year-old IPE deck refinished by Nico. He came and pressured washed, sanded, washed with a wood brightener, and applied two coats at the same time of oil. My deck looks wonderful. Give him a call (510)-603-3010
