Ideas needed for finding male role models for teen girl

Hello,

Do you have any ideas for areas or ways we can find male role models? Daughter yearns for connection but we just don't know/have any in our lives?

Thanks,

Mary

Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts) Troop 42 in Berkeley is an amazing group of 15 girls ages 11-17.  The male adult leaders (dads, Eagle Scouts) are awesome and great role models.  They’re trained and Scouting America takes safety very seriously — 2 deep leadership at all times.  Here’s the troops website with more information:

My Daughter just started taking Taekwando lessons. Both her instructors are male (one older and one younger) and she holds them in very high regard, Respect and integrity are part of the lessons and she is getting self-defense training too. That is why we went there in the first place.

Note of reassurance that you might be overthinking it. I grew up without a father, surrounded by women, no male family friends, knew very few adult males well (and the nearby male relative I saw frequently was mentally ill). You the parent can't really know that a martial arts instructor or a scout leader is a willing participant in a "yearning for connection". Like me, your daughter will be patching together her understanding of adult males from school teachers and friends. The real upside of this is not having to unlearn any weird family dynamic gendered stuff, and you don't need to worry about comparisons to daddy with future boyfriends. She'll be okay!
