How does OUSD assignment work for Elementary > Middle School
Hi Parents,
I'm currently ranking my choices for elementary schools for my son who'll begin kindergarten next year, and curious about how your elementary school assignment affects middle school assignment, and how middle school assignment affects high school assignment.
We are zoned for Glenview Elementary and Edna Brewer Middle, and will be ranking Glenview as our first choice as our neighborhood school. But if for whatever reason, such as demand rates exceeding 100% (which I know they do for Glenview) my son ends up getting assigned a school outside of our school district, does that affect his middle school assignment?
For instance if he ended up in an elementary school outside of our local district, would he still get assigned Edna Brewer since it's our district middle school, or would he be assigned the middle school nearest his elementary school outside our district?
Thanks for any insight.

No impact at all. Do not worry about middl school now.
Generally, elementary school placement doesn't impact middle school (or middle school high school). The only exception is if your student is in a combined elementary/middle school (like Melrose Leadership Academy or Greenleaf). Then children who went to elementary school there are given priority in the middle school.
When you apply for middle school it starts from scratch. You get priority based on where you live at the time you apply. Where you go to elementary school has no effect on your priority for middle school, unless it is a K-8 school.
When we went through the process for K, we were not assigned to our neighborhood school (Crocker Highlands), but to another school (Bella Vista) that is in the district for Edna Brewer. I was told that we were assigned to Bella Vista as it is in the same middle school district.
Fast forward - we are now in 5th grade and the lines have moved. Not all Crocker Highlands kids are in the district for Edna Brewer. For our family this means that we are now assigned to Westlake as our neighborhood middle school. Read: you can't plan ahead.
