Good eye doctor in East Bay?

At 42 yrs old my eyesight has changed and I would like a referral for a trusted eye doctor. My eyes are sensitive to light (especially screens) and one of my eyes feels odd whenever I remove my glasses. Although I wear glasses I have not have my eyes dialated and checked by a doctor yearly and would like to start doing so. East Bay is preferred but can travel a little too.

I love my eye doctor! Edie De Niro at East Bay Eye Specialists. I’ve seen her for a few years now and think she’s awesome.

We, as a family, have been very very pleased with Solano Eye Care.  Dr. Woodring taught at UC Optometry and has a wonderful reputation.  He and Dr. Chen are patient and very thorough.  It takes a good hour for their check-ups and he insists on dilation in order to properly diagnose or monitor possible issues.  Both my children were his patients and we continue to be his patients.

Another thumbs up for Woodring and Solano Eye Care.  My wife had an urgent care issue recently and saw Dr. Denise Tirado there and was VERY impressed by her as well.

Our family has gone to Rockridge Optometry on College and loved it. Some of the older doctors may not be taking new patients but we have had a great experience with anyone we have seen.

Sounds like my eyes post Covid lock down. I thought I damaged my eyes from excessive doom scrolling the news on my phone. Turned out I was just getting older and needed progressives. Just a thought.

I highly Lunettes du Monde Optometry on Forth St in Berkeley. In addition to being easily accessible and having a lovely and helpful  office staff, the optometrist actually does the entire exam and as a result was the first to diagnose me with a pretty rare eye condition that had been missed in every prior eye exam over the last fifteen years. My condition was apparent to her in some of the initial tests they do at any office (the part where you look into the machine with the little house/barn) but every other time I’ve done it an assistant did this portion of my exam and didn’t have the expertise to recognize and diagnose (I have Keratoconus).

I have been to Dr. Harold Woodring, on Solano Ave. He is an opthamologist. He taught at the U.C. Meredith Morgan eye center for many years.

My doctor is Steven Pascal MD at Eye Physicians of the East Bay. He is skilled and ethical.  He may have some connection to Stanford, but that can be forgiven.

His partners Michael Wang MD and Jane Lohman MD, both of whom I have also seen, are also topnotch.  I find that Dr. Wang does not always have the best "bedside manner"  If he is rushed, he becomes impatient. He does not necessarily disclose as much information as I would have liked to have received.

EPOEB is in the gold glass building at the corner of Grand Avenue and Broadway in downtown Oakland

For glasses, Richard Jue OD at Viewpoint Optometric in Montclair can't be beat.

If you are looking to start with an optometrist, Dr. Samii at Your Two Eyes on Vine in Berkeley is really one of the best I've ever worked with --super smart, takes her time, used to teach optometry as well so she seems current in her knowledge.

RE:

I would start at the UC optometry clinic.  I have been getting my eyes checked there annually for thirty years, and my child with a complicated health situation was also referred there by his specialists at UCSF.  You'll be seen by a grad student and then at the end by the supervising doctor.  The exams are extremely thorough (and inexpensive!) and I've been very happy with the level of care I've received.  I wear contacts, have light-sensitive eyes, have the beginnings of cataracts, have a family history of glaucoma, etc. etc. and they've stayed on top of all of that.  Last year when I had symptoms that might have indicated a serious problem, they got me in for an urgent appointment that afternoon and then got me an appointment with the top retina specialist in Oakland for the next morning.

I will also second the recommendation for Dr. Edie De Niro in Oakland -- my elderly mom sees her for her glaucoma and macular degeneration and absolutely loves her.
