geriatric psychiatrist
Hello:
I am looking for a geriatric psychiatrist, (for medication, not therapy) preferably in the Walnut Creek area, to work with my 88 year old mother, who has dementia and pretty significant depression and anxiety. Please let me know if you have any recommendations. Obviously if they take Medicare that would be great, but it doesn't seem like many psychiatrists take insurance these days.
Thanks for your help.

Try calling Dr. Melanie Watkins: https://melaniewatkinsmd.com
My father-in-law was referred to her for similar issues, and he had an initial appointment with her. She may still have openings, and I think she takes some insurance. Unfortunately, my father-in-law refused further psychiatric care (not from Dr. Watkins in particular, just in general), though the referring physician spoke very highly of her. Her office is in downtown Walnut Creek.
Hi, I can give some general advice navigating the system.
Is your mom established with a geriatrician? They are usually experienced at managing mood disorders associated with dementia, including with medications and other interventions like art or music therapy, day programs, etc, depending on your situation. It may be helpful to see a geriatrician in one of the bigger health systems like John Muir, Sutter, or UCSF. These all should accept Medicare. Then they can refer to a trusted psychiatrist if needed for more complex med management.
Another option is to use medicare.gov/care-compare to search for geriatric psychiatry providers near you who accept Medicare, and reach out directly.
