Do any local public middle schools offer Algebra I in 8th grade
My family will be visiting Berkeley on sabbatical for the academic year and we are looking for housing in Berkeley/Albany/El Cerrito etc. now. One of our children is 12, and will be going into 7th grade in the fall. He is currently in 6th grade in a large struggling middle school in a large struggling district, that was taken over by the state right before the pandemic due to very poor performance, and unfortunately things have not improved. I give this background because my child is in an advanced academics program within his larger middle school that is working relatively well, and he is very motivated to return to this program when we move back for 8th grade. However, this program includes accelerated math that is on track to take Algebra I in 8th grade. I've been having a very hard time sorting out whether advanced/accelerated math is an option in any of the local public middle schools (Berkeley/Albany/El Cerrito or others), or if there is simply no tracking? Some of the schools list Algebra as the 8th grade math curriculum, but I don't know if that is equivalent to Algebra I or not. Are there advanced math options in some schools? Or, would it be possible for my child to take 8th grade math in 7th grade in some schools if he has already covered the 7th grade material? In the worst case he can re-take math he's already learned in math class, and then supplement at home to keep up with where he'll need to be coming back, but I know that will be very frustrating for him, and it also doesn't seem ideal for making sure he's on track and will be accepted back into the advanced program here (he will likely have to re-apply since we'll have withdrawn from the district when we leave). He is also currently taking advanced classes in science, social studies and English, but those are not cumulative in the same way, the advanced courses just go into more depth, so we're less concerned about other subjects. Thanks!

My daughter just completed 8th grade at The Crowden School in Berkeley, where they covered Algebra I for math. Although not a public school, I thought I'd mention this in case you would consider sending your child to a unique private school that blends daily chamber music instruction with a strong academic curriculum in a small class setting. We discovered this school last year, arranged for a visit, and our daughter instantly fell in love with it. Now that the school year is over, I can share that it was an amazing experience and we are so glad we decided to send her here.
