Digging out my basement

Does anyone have experience digging out a dirt basement?  I've been reading online and it seems safe to do by myself, so long as I avoid my home's foundation.

I was thinking about renting a backhoe and digging a three-foot trench that would allow me to walk under the house (instead of crawl).  Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?  Thanks.
