Claremont Middle: Recent Experiences?

We are weighing our middle school options and would love to hear from recent or current Claremont parents about their experiences. What has the quality of education been, especially math and ELA? What about the sports? The sense of community? We have a sporty kid who would really like to be on as many teams as possible and who also needs some academic challenge. How do parents feel about the new(er) principal? Any feedback would be appreciated!

We have a kid at Claremont. The principal (and the administration in general) is terrific, from our perspective. Fights and disruptive behavior do happen but the administration works very hard to take care of issues right away. We don’t have a lot of personal experience with the sports at Claremont but there’s no shortage of opportunities to join the various teams (soccer, basketball, baseball, track, etc.). I’d also rate the sense of community highly—my sense is that teachers care, many parents are involved, and the administration is supportive. As far as academics goes, it’s OK. The teachers are (mostly) good and experienced, but many kids are way below grade level in math and reading and someone who wants academic challenge may be bored in that respect. There’s no effort made to challenge or stimulate kids who are at or above grade level—I think the teachers just don’t have the bandwidth. That being said I would choose Claremont again. It is a nice place.
