arborist for dying/fire hazard backyard tree

We’ve got an avocado tree that’s clearly struggling — not dead but whole boughs that seem gone. We also just got a letter from our insurance saying the tree needs trimming in any case, as it overhangs part of our roof. Can anyone recommend an arborist who could both assess the tree’s overall health and do the pruning work?  We’re in Berkeley.

We had our ~80' Live Oak pruned beautifully (and affordably) by Limb King. Owner Kingman Limb is a certified arborist and has a wonderful crew of skilled climbers working with him. They kept the site safe and tidy during the 6 hours of thoughtful pruning and were happy to leave us with a driveway full of nice mulch.

If you care about the long-term health of your trees (which can be a large investment and costly liability), you'll go with a Certified Arborist with an understanding of tree biology. You can find one at the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) website.

Hi,

I hired Stephen Scrafford recently to assess two pepper trees on our property that looked sick. Sadly, they had to be removed, which he did and trimmed a lot of our other trees. He did an excellent job at a reasonable price. He does not do stump grinding, though.

I hired Martin Arnest last year to prune a huge climbing rose which had become too large and was in danger of falling over. He did a fine job of trimming it just right and it is growing well this year. He is a certified arborist and can be reached at: treepro [at] comcast.net

I can give a very strong recommendation for Certified Arborist Gregg Huddleston and his son, Zach, of Specialized Arbor Works in Oakland. I have worked with them, and gotten their advice over the past 10+ years for a Podocarpus, Japanese maples, and other species.

They know and love trees and prune carefully, artistically, and do so for the best health and ideal growth of the tree. They are also careful to watch for nesting birds and animals. And, as a bonus, they are just super nice guys.
