Visiting Cancun

  • We have never considered this kind of vacation in the past, but now that we have a kid, we need to press the 'easy' button. Looking specifically in Cancun area, since it seems that there's direct flights from SFO and we'll be going to visit family on the East Coast afterwards. I'm looking for recommendations of specific resorts to look at, and any tips on how to book or other considerations for first timers?  I have backpacked all over the world, and even though this is supposed to be easy, I am not sure where to begin!  Finally, if you have gone in the past, but would have safety concerns today, I'd be curious to know that as well.

Hello! We did Club Med Cancun in 2014 when my son was 3. We went through Pleasant Holidays on a package and we were able to get a good deal back then.
They have a lot of things for kids - a kids club daycare with activities etc. , nice rooms and a beautiful beach. A kid pool and a bigger pool with a deep end.
Be aware they serve French food since Club Med is French - a bit of a bummer for us going to Mexico - but overall food was good.
We were able to get a taxi and go to Tulum ruins, Playa del Carmen and a cenote.
In the end, all inclusives weren’t our thing so we didn’t do it again, but - without other examples to compare -  Club Med was a good one!

My husband and I have been to Le Blanc in Cancun 3-4 times. It’s amazing! However, right now I personally would not be comfortable going to Cancun given the violence that’s been happening there near the resort areas.

How old is your child? What’s your budget? Are you looking for a place where you are hoping to get a break from your kid a bit or looking to have a family together type vacation?

On the high end with lots of adult amenities, Grand Velas is incredible but I believe the child must be 5 years old for the kids club. We don’t use kids club because we want to do everything together as a family but Grand Velas kids club is amazing and the food is delicious!

Still in the luxury category but a bit more affordable is Hyatt Ziva which we find very family friendly and has decent food. They have shows and activities.

Club Med accepts younger kids in the kids club and have a lot of fun activities.

If your are looking for a more boutique feel, Karisma Azul is a nice one.

We like the convenience of booking through Expedia or booking.com but sometimes we book directly with the hotel. We always buy travel insurance.

We don’t leave the resort, so we don’t have any concerns for safety. We prearrange an airport transportation and go straight from the airport to the hotel.

Seaweed is a big problem, so you may not be able to swim in the ocean.

Last December we stayed at Moon Palace south of Cancun.  It is three all-inclusive resorts in one.  We stayed at the Grand resort (within Moon Palace). Due to an overbooking, we stayed in Sunrise (original resort at Moon Palace) for two days at the beginning.  Sunrise was nice, but the rooms are smaller. The Grand is quite nice and is close to the kids water park, which you have to pay extra for if you aren't staying at the Grand.  Our younger daughter was 11 at the time and would *ask* to be dropped off at the kids club (which is inside the water park, but separate so the kids don't have access to it while at the kids club) -- there was a climbing wall, putt putt, mini bumper cars, etc.

I found making reservations for the more upscale restaurants a hassle, and the food was good but not great.  We enjoyed the spa (both girls got their hair cut, we got a couples massage, etc.), the many pools and did a couple excursions (I set up separately through Viator).  They do sell 'fractional' ownerships. We decided to do the sales pitch (to get all of our points to be useable at the spa), but they are hard core sellers -- we didn't buy though. If you know someone who is a member, you get some perks (less expensive rate and resort points), but, if you don't know anyone, you can also make the reservations through hotels.com or another.

Everyone there was super friendly (other than the front desk staff who we had to deal with regarding the overbooking issue--this is probably only a problem during the holidays) and we felt safe as the resort is about 20 min from Cancun.  The beach is nice but not amazing but tbh, other than walking along it a few nights, I was the only one who spent any time there because there were so many pools and other activities!

Funny enough, we just came back from our first trip to an all-inclusive in Cancun.  We stayed at the Moon Palace Grand.  I don't have any point of comparison between this resort and any other resort in Cancun, but our experience was wonderful and definitely exceeded expectations.  (That said, my expectations were set by the circa-1970's TV ads for Sandals resorts).  Anyway, we chose the Moon Palace Grand for the diversity of activities that appealed to our very active 13-year old daughter.  They have a water park, several pools, a video game room, daily beach volleyball, etc.  Separate from this, they have 20+ restaurants spread out over their 3 Moon Palace resorts, and lots of other activities that we all enjoyed.  I booked through a travel agent, but apparently the best way to book is through a "member" - I would suggest finding a member via their Facebook page.  The Moon Palace is HUGE and when we arrived it was the tail end of spring break for much of North America and the UK - the result was that it was uncomfortably crowded.  However, it got progressively quieter and, thus, more enjoyable and relaxing for us, so if you can go in an off-peak time it will be a better experience.  We would definitely go back - we appreciated the all-inclusive nature - paying upfront and then not worrying about the cost of anything.  Once the reservations were made and we arrived it was very easy.  It was also very nice to not have to pull my credit card out for every drink or snack.  As for safety, no concerns at all.  Coming from the Bay Area much of the world feels safer, including Cancun.

Avoid Club Med Cancun! We were in a similar situation, looking for an easily accessible all-inclusive vacation and the Club Med in Cancun looked great but the transition from the airport to the resort was bizarrely drawn-out and complicated, mosquitos were pretty bad at the lagoon, 2 of us had food poisoning  — it may have been due to short staffing b/c of Covid (this was 11/21) but I would recommend finding someplace else….

We went to our first and only all inclusive resort in Cancun at Royalton Riveria in Jan 2021. At that time we also needed an easy button vacation with a preschooler.  We had a great time and 2 years later it is still our child's favorite family vacation. The most stressful and confusing part was trying to navigate and locate our resort shuttle to get from the airport to the resort. There were alot of other independent transportation options trying to get your business even if you have already booked one in advance.  Honestly I don't know if it was better for us to book in advance with our resort or not. But we did have to wait awhile for the resort shuttle and in the moment I wished we had just grabbed one at the airport that was immediately available.

The link to the all inclusive we stayed at is: https://www.royaltonresorts.com/resorts/riviera-cancun

We had a wonderful time at Club Med in January 2023, having had what sounds like similar travel habits to yours. We had booked a transfer from the airport which was a very straightforward taxi ride, about 25 minutes or so. We didn't take advantage of the Mini/Kids Club, but our 2.5 y/o loved it regardless. The food was good (there's a steak house, a Mexican restaurant and a "general" restaurant which, at least during our stay, did not serve French food at all) and everything was super kid friendly. There are many activities for children and families even outside of the dedicated clubs, and a pool that was almost exclusively frequented by families. We were very pleasantly surprised by the whole experience!

  • We're heading to the Yucatan in July for a friend's wedding, and are looking to spend a couple days before and after in or near Cancun.  This will be our first time in the area, and the number of lodging options is overwhelming!  We'd love suggestions for good baby friendly places to stay (it'll be me, my husband, and our 10 month old).  We're especially not sure if it's worth it to go all in and stay at one of the big name all-inclusive places, or if somewhere midrange would have a good beach and pools.  We're open to staying in Cancun, or anywhere within 30-45 min drive.

In the past we've stayed in Playa del Carmen with small children, it's about 30 minutes south of Cancun. We've never stayed at an all-inclusive because we like to get out and explore and try different restaurants, also we don't want to be stranded in one place. The all-inclusives are usually more remote and you need a car to get anywhere. Playa del Carmen is very walkable and there are plenty of nice mid range hotels near the beach with great pools and dozens of good places to eat nearby. The ocean isn't too rough and we have never had a bad or scary experience in Playa. FYI apparently there is an unusually large amount of sargassum ( seaweed) this year in the Yucatan - likely due to climate change. It isn't dangerous but it does stink as it decomposes on the beach.

We stayed at Playa Akumal, rented an air b and b there, Villas Flamingo.   We had a pool, and were right on the beach.  We were able to see the baby turtles, and the folks that protect them.  This area has little shopping, and just a couple restaurants.  We ate out a couple times.    We bought our groceries, cooked for ourselves, and just enjoyed the beach.

My friends and I just celebrated a 40th birthday at Villa Del Palmar (https://www.villapalmarcancun.com/) in Cancun last week, and it was lovely! We did the all-inclusive package. The food was great, and the suites were spaceous! It is touted as one of the most family friendly resorts in the area. It had several pools, and a nice beach that accomodated swimming and snorkling. Even though we did not take kids this time, all 5 moms on our trip thought that this would be a perfect place for the whole family.

We've been coming to fiesta americana properties in cozumel and cancun for over 10 years with 2 kids starting from age 4 & 6 through now 14 and 16. All inclusive is the way to go because it truly feels like a vacation with nothing else to worry to spend (just bring tip money). I prefer this side of mexico as the water is much warmer - Caribbean side, we are divers and enjoy the sea. In Cancun the condessa is great and a quiet location but the food is slightly better at the Coral beach. We bought our time share in cozumel but we've used it to take friends and family (the kids grand parents) every other year to experience all inclusive and theyve all enjoyed it. --- Im currently responding to you from my Birthday weekend at the condessa and will be here all week. Feel free to to DM me if you have questions!

Fairmont Mayakoba in the Riviera Maya. Lovely all-inclusive hotel, friendly people, amazing food, multiple pools (one with a small waterslide), very kid-friendly. The only potential downside (other than the price!) is the beach is not great, as there is a ton of seaweed. Nevertheless, I would go back with my family in a heartbeat!

Cancun vacation with kids

Jan 2005

My husband and I are thinking about vacationing in Cancun with our one-year-old and four-year-old. I've always steered clear of Cancun because of its spring break/party place reputation, but it's accessible, the beaches look so inviting, and the diving is great. Is it suitable for a family in September? We would like a higher-end place that is family-friendly with a nice beach, a pool that is good for kids, and a kids' club. A place that has suites or bedrooms so we can tuck the baby's crib in a separate space would be ideal. Any suggestions? Also, we've never done the all-inclusive thing before, but it seems like maybe a good way to go since we don't plan on venturing out a whole lot due to the kids. Thoughts? Trixie

I've stayed at the Westin before. It's a nice hotel. I stayed there before I had kids though. However, we stayed at a Westin with our baby and they are great. They provide wonderful cribs and amenities. Check when you make a reservation to see if they have similar amenities at the one in Cancun. anon

We went to Cancun with our 13 year old daughter in December. We stayed in the ''Hotel Zone''. I would not recommend that you stay in this area. Our trips out of Cancun were the highlights - Cancun itself is very commercial, except in the downtown area (but there are no beaches in downtown). Playa del Carmen is very nice. I don't know of a specific place that you could stay, but I'm sure there are some nice ones. From Playa del Carmen you can take the ferry to Cozumel. It is not too far from the Cancun airport. Hi! My family and I stayed at Casa Maya, Cancun, last year. It's a time-share place, nothing fancy, but very OK. I don't know if it's all inclusive, though. It has suites with living room and kitchenette. What I just LOVED about it in terms of kid- friendly-ness was the beach. Since the hotel is located exactly in front of Isla Mujeres, the beach is very quiet, no large waves nor tide. It's just like a large swimming pool, no deeper than knee-level, so it's the perfect beach for little kids to get in. There's also a small playground at the hotel, so in general it's very, very kid-friendly. It's too bad Cancun has such a bad reputation because of spring- breakers, but the truth is that it's a BEAUTIFUL place, with lots and lots of things to do and places to visit. Hope you enjoy it. Toni

a couple years ago i visited tulum, which is about 70 miles south of cancun. there are all inclusive resorts along the coast from cancun to tulum, the Maya Riviera (or Riviera Maya?) it's called. the coast is beautiful and doesn't have all the business and drinking of cancun. cancun didn't really seem like a family place to me, more like a party place. most of the mexicans speak english and there are way too many Hard Rock Cafe type places. even malls. it reminded me of Las Vegas to be honest with you. look online for all inculsives in the Maya Riviera (the coast). it's beautiful and more family friendly. the beaches all along the coast are outstanding. monica

Re: Active vacation with 2yo and 4yo (June 2002)
Hi, we took my VERY active 2 1/2 year old to Cancun, Mexico. I know I should not recommend a foreign place by saying that you will have all the comforts of home, but, hey, with small children you need it! We stayed at a strip lined with big Hotels right on the beach, south of Cancun. The hotel, Oasis, had all meals included. It was only 2 story high, so it was like being in a house. We went to their 3 restaurants every day, and for once somebody else cleaned up after baby afterwards! The swimming pool had a large area for kids, and my baby made friends with lots of Canadian and South Americans. The place was clean, efficient, everybody spoke English, everyone was polite and friendly. The busses to the little town run every half minute. The town was safe, had many small shops and a big Mall. We took an organized one-day trip to the piramids, and my baby insisted on climbing all the way to the top, running, while I was terrified! (climbing down is difficult, for adults). It costs less than Hawaii. The rest is much the same as Hawaii (we went too, the previous year). Oh, another thing, the water is warmer, so you can swim in the Ocean (in Hawaii my daughter refused to set foot on the beach!). Laura
