  • My work team is planning a retreat for ~8 people in the East Bay on Oct. 17-18, and we’re struggling to find a location. We need meeting space for both days, plus a place for everyone to stay (in individual rooms) 10/17-10/19. Meeting space and lodging could be the same or different places depending on what’s available. Berkeley or Oakland would be ideal, but we're open to other places nearby. Bonus points for locations with access to gardens/nature! We’re aiming for affordable but comfortable. Suggestions will be very much appreciated!

It's been years since I've checked into it, but the UC Faculty Club was affordable (compared to local hotels and such) when we used it and it's close to Strawberry Canyon for walks/hiking. I don't recall the parking situation, but could be worth checking in to.

If you are a non-profit, the Block Community Hub in Uptown Oakland offers a wonderful and FREE space! You might also want to look at Parks and Rec locations.  We have used the Joaquin Miller Community Center before for a group about the same size, and it was perfect (and beautiful).  Another suggestion is the Lake Temescal Room.  Good luck!

I plan a lot of local events and three spaces came to mind – 1) The Faculty Club at UC Berkeley. Nestled in a serene corner on campus with huge trees and lawns outdoors. They also can house guests (limited space, otherwise Hotel Durant is a quick walk). Classic interior. Attended both conferences and weddings here.  2) Berkeley City Club. Hotel. Indoor Pool. Amazing interior event spaces with fireplaces, library den, etc.. My personal fav. 3) Marriott Residence Inn has a beautiful rooftop and many indoor spaces for small group gatherings.  More modern.

I think you are having trouble because of UC-Berkeley's homecoming (and alumni and parent's weekend). Everything is booked. Good luck! If you move it to another date I think you'd have more options. We did that for a work thing too this year and were able to find spaces on the 21st.

    Check out Dharma College. https://coworkingwithwisdom.com/?wbraid=ClMKCAjwlbu2BhBxEkMANWefgE05ZLwDZ4g_jXF_QeJPo7HlysT0LwqQ3KD4892JM4q_pArtnD_yLYDOu5ML93SsvIwjxEoXlpHTXmuFuIwwGgJ9xA

My team booked a room for a 2 day retreat with 7 people. Great location and convenient hotels within walking distance (several stayed at Hotel Shattack, locals took public transportation). Easy access to lots of food options as well. And the price was reasonable (I also think we may have negotiated a bit). Would definitely go back and happy to share other details if helpful.

  • My women's group of 10 has been told that the lovely private place where we have held our annual retreat for 25 years is closing.  Starting next year we need a new place.  Does anyone know of a small private campground where we could rent and be the only ones there?  The lovely place we have grown so attached to was ideal because it had yurts, a hot tub, a wonderful kitchen.  Most importantly, it had a few proper beds and affordable price which are now needed given some of our members are now seniors and their bodies and budgets need this.  I know this is a total unicorn I'm looking for but I figured if anyone out there knows of such a place they will be on BPN.  Many thanks in advance.

The hostel in Point Reyes or Bishop's Ranch in Healdsburg might work.

Hi there, the Quaker Center in Ben Lomond is a really lovely spot. It is less camping and more cabins/cottages in nature. Welcome (quakercenter.org)

Heartwood Mendocino is the best place hosted by the loveliest people!  I have rented it all out before and it's just a dream.  You can also rent a cottage across the lawn to go with it but it's not necessary for enjoying the space.

  • Hi,

I have been asked to coordinate a retreat for 35 elementary educators for this July. This is so last minute, and I would like some recommendations. The venue must have meeting space (one large meeting room to accommodate 40 adults for two days), and we prefer for the venue to have on site over night stay. We are looking to arrive July 25th and check out on July 26th. We would also need to have meals on site.

Can anyone suggest a place? We have been to the Marconi Center for the past 3 years and would love to try another venue. Livermore, Sonoma, Santa Rosa, and such areas would be great.

    Do you know suggestions?

    Thank you in advance.

Some places I've been to a group "retreat", which meet your criteria, though I've no idea whether they'd be available on short notice:

YMCA at Point Bonita. Dorm accommodations with rooms that have 4-12 bunks, dining hall, two meeting rooms (one might have a capacity near 40, the other is quite large and can hold at least 100).  Beautiful setting on the hill overlooking the ocean near Rodeo Beach.

NatureBridge, formerly known as Marin Headlands Institute.  Down the hill from Pt Bonita, near the lagoon and the beach. Dorm accommodations mostly in large rooms, a few smaller. Dining hall has truly excellent food.  Three (?) meeting rooms of various sizes.

Walker Creek Ranch, west of Petaluma in a forest setting that feels quite remote from any kind of traffic or ordinary city life (but does take longer to get to from the urban Bay Area than the places in the Marin Headlands!).  Cabin/lodge style accommodations mostly 4-6 people per room in separate buildings with separate exterior entrances rather than on a hall or in one big dorm room. Camping available. Dining hall and large meeting space.

    Good luck!

Have you considered Asilomar in Monterey?

Bishop's Ranch in Healdsburg has meals, large meeting areas and overnight stays. They do camps in the summer though, so not sure about availability.

  • I would like to host a nature-based conference for 10-20 people in my profession next year and have started searching for locations to rent to host the event.  We must be near nature, have various sleeping options (outside in sleeping bag, shared room, or individual room), and have good healthy food prepared for us on site.  We will need to have access to outdoor spaces for some experiential components.  I'm really open to any location in the US, but California-based centers would be ideal.  I want it to be a destination retreat...meaning: people will come to learn something but they'll also come because it will be a beautiful and relaxing place to stay!  Do you know of any places like this?

I've been to a conference at Asilomar near Monterey which is operated by the state. It was originally designed by Julia Morgan as a girl scout camp.  It's beautiful, with dorm-type rooms as well as hotel rooms. Trees, deer, beach, sand dunes, footpaths, fireplaces, etc. Not sure about sleeping outside though. Probably not.  There is a cafeteria-style dining hall and the food is not that bad. https://www.visitasilomar.com/

Check out EarthRise Retreat Center at Institute of Noetic Sciences in Petaluma. I haven't been there myself but I hear it's a beautiful facility.

I also suggest Asilomar. It's right near a beautiful beach with tidepools

Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove (near Monterey/Carmel) seems like a perfect fit - it's just across the street from an exquisite stretch of beach, lots of hiking trails, they provide food (and it's good), and it's just gorgeous (in a rustic way).  Check it out: https://www.visitasilomar.com/

I went to a work retreat at the Westerbeke Ranch in Sonoma in 2008. It was a beautiful setting, had amazing food, and we did have outdoor activities. Not sure about sleeping outside, but I imagine that could be arranged. There is also a pool and lots of spaces for relaxing. Good luck!

Look into Bell Valley, run and owned by a wonderful Berkeley family.

Check out 1440 Multiversity in the Santa Cruz mountains. It fits everything you’re looking for except I don’t think there’s any camping. The food is excellent.

Check out the Grand Reserve Inn near Lodi.  Its on a beautiful property with views of the vines.  I have been considering it for a work retreat and its prices are very reasonable compared to similar places in Napa or Carmel.

Asilomar, in Pacific Grove, is lovely. Lovely campus, adjacent to sand dunes with a boardwalk, short walk to Asilomar State Beach and tidepools, great birdwatching, lots of deer. No tenting, I don't think, but a variety of room options.

Having worked on both the reservations side and as an environmental educator, I can give a personal and very strong recommendation for Nature Bridge in the Marin Headlands. It is in an amazing setting: the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the buildings are right at Rodeo Beach with miles of hiking trails literally at your doorstep. They offer meeting rooms of various sizes as well as absolutely delicious food (my son recently attended a 3 day environmental education opportunity with his 5th grade class, and every student and adult that I spoke to raved about the food.) They are great about accommodating allergies as well as providing meals that are vegetarian, vegan, and carnivore friendly. For sleeping accommodations they offer dorm style and small, semi-private room options (not sure if you can pitch tents). I cannot say enough great things about NatureBridge and hope that they will work for your group.

Check out commonweal in Bolinas. Just beautiful and peaceful.

  • Hi, I'm looking for a venue in the East Bay to host a conference.  Ideally, there would be several rooms (with projector, screen, and AV) so that we can hold seminars concurrently and it needs to be large enough to accommodate 300+ people.  We hosted this conference last year at the Oakland Scottish Rite, which worked out perfectly, but it seems we are running into problems securing a date for this year.  Are there venues that are equivalent to the Oakland Scottish Rite?  I am going to look into hotels in the area as well.  We are open to any and all suggestions.  Thanks, BPN!

Maybe the Lawrence Hall of Science?

El Cerrito High? newly rebuilt, nice large theater. Albany Community Center has very helpful staff (recently had a seminar there), but not sure if main room can accommodate 300. East Bay center for the Performing Arts? (downtown Richmond) - again not sure of max capacity in the biggest room, but lots of breakout rooms. Gaia building downtown Berkeley? And then any of the local colleges/universities (Cal, Mills, St Mary's, Contra Costa College, Maritime Academy CSU in Vallejo...).  Churches? UCC, Arlington Comm Church... I feel confident you'll find something!

I had one more thought - DeJean Middle School in Richmond. I have been to a conference there organized by the district (WCCUSD) and it worked well. The main room is also HUGE. Supporting a local school district by using their facilities is also a nice gesture. But it's not very BART accessible, if that's a concern (does have a couple small parking lots). ECHS (one of my earlier suggestions) is a short, safe walk from EC Plaza BART.

    try peerspace.com...

Chabot Space & Science Center might work for your purpose.

If you are a not-for-profit, The California Endowment has beautiful space with a large room that holds around 120 people and other breakout rooms. I know they recently moved and are remodeling so you'll need to check and see if they'll be open on your date. The space is so nice that we schedule our yearly conference around when their FREE space is available.
