  • Seeking sewing/fashion design camps for teen

    Hi, our 14-year-old is getting into sewing and fashion design. Can any recommend an east bay summer camp? My kid is queer and prefers queer spaces, if that makes a difference, but they are open to any space that fits. Thanks for any recommendations!

    I recommend Sew Much Fun, a camp taught by Marianne Henri out of her lower floor studio in Albany. She runs an open-ended sewing workshop and meets each kid where they are. My daughter did this camp many summers running and came out of it with cool things to wear and a few new skills. This was some years back, but I notice that there are still notices about the camp in BPN. Seems like just the right place for your child.

    My teenager also developed an interest in sewing lately mostly due to the need to alter (trim) the pants he buys in the thrift shops. We found a place called The Alameda Sewing room. He hasn't visited it yet because of his packed schedule, but he is signed up for a camp this summer. The city of Albany recreation department is running some afterschool classes and summer sewing camps. Again, no personal experience, but could be what you are looking for. Best of luck! Sewing is an awesome skill.

  • Parson's School of Design pre-college summer

    Hi, anyone have experience with the pre-college summer programs at Parsons and Parsons Paris? My kid wants to apply to fashion design school for college. We are hoping the Parson's program would be more than a boondoggle and my kid would be able to create a legitimate portfolio to use to apply to colleges. I get that it really depends on the kid and what they put into it. I'm wondering if these programs are set up with these goals in mind. If they're worth the time and money and if they are a legitimate gateway into art/design schools.

    Any feedback based on experience would be great!

    How fun! I am not familiar with the Parsons program, but I'd like to suggest The School of the New York Times Summer Academy. They have a couple of fashion focused courses including "The Future of Fashion" (https://nytedu.com/courses/pre-college/the-future-of-fashion/). Course offerings change from year to year. I'm not sure if any this year have a direct design component or are more industry focused.

    My daughter attended SoNTY the past two summers. The program is exceptional - high quality instruction from persons prominent in their fields and engaged and mature peer group. The residential component is run in a way that is both safe and supports age-appropriate growth and independence.  The best part is living right in the heart of Manhattan for two weeks.

    The program is competitive and the admissions cycle is open, so if you're interested, don't delay.

Camp for 12 year old interested in fashion

I'm looking for a day camp for a 12 year old girl who is interested in fashion and make-up. She is pretty serious about these pursuits. We are in Oakland but nearby east bay would also work. Thanks Looking for camp

Check out CCA- California college of the arts. I think they have programs for middle school aged students and possibly younger. Barry

Rhythmix Cultural Works in Alameda has a couple camps that might be of interest. The first appears to be full, but for next year, it's a sewing camp that culminates with a runway show of the outfits created by the campers. The second camp is fashion show production and is still open for this year. It focuses on hair, makeup, the sound and light systems, music, stage, sets, and actual production of the aforementioned runway show for the other camp. Summer fashion design for teen

My daughter is interested in taking a hands-on fashion class this summer. I noticed that California College of the Arts offers all-day classes. Are there others being offered that might be of shorter duration and therefore more affordable? Thanks, d

Couple thoughts on Fashion Design.

(1) At ''Sew Now'' in Lafayette (corner of Moraga Rd and Moraga Blvd) there are fashion production classes. This is a new place. Give them a call to see if there is a fit. Week long classes. BART is 5-minutes walk through suburban town.

(2) For something less tame, check out Saffron Rare Threads in the city, near 17th and Delores.

There is a BART station nearby, but your kid has to be street smart to negotiate that scene.

The founders, Yugula and Priya, have apprenticeships for fashion design purposed people. Not for the weak of heart, but my oh my, very fun. Best of luck, Nathan
