Organic peanut butter that tastes good?
Feb 2010
I can't believe I'm about to ask the people of Berkeley this question, but I'm pregnant and craving.
I *love* unorganic, sugary peanut butter. Brands such as Skippy, Jiff and if anyone remembers it, Peter Pan Peanut Butter. I know I shouldn't, but I do.
I have tried a half a dozen different kinds of organic or ''natural'' peanut butter in an attempt to find a healthier alternative, but I cannot find one that doesn't separate and doesn't taste too peanut-y. (If I wanted the taste of plain peanuts, I'd just eat peanuts.)
Does anyone have any recommendations for some sort of compromise? Something that still tastes as decadent as the mainstream brands, but isn't so laden with things I shouldn't consume? And where can I find it? anon
Try Maranatha No-Stir Peanut Butter. It reminds me of the peanut butter in Reece's Peanut Butter Cups. It's still chock full of sugar and palm oil but, hey, at least it's organic! And delicious Congrats on your pregnancy! Jamie
whole foods 365 brand is very good and similar to what i remember mainstream brands tasting like. pb lover
I am like you, and would really prefer to eat Skippy or Jif, but I think I have found the best alternative - you can get it at Whole Foods, it's their own brand ''365 unsweetened organic peanut butter''. It doesn't separate, but you do have to keep it in the fridge - I leave it out for five-ten minutes before I use it and it spreads easily. Has a great flavor. Enjoy!
If you can get to Costco, they have the Kirkland brand (Costco house brand) Organic Peanut Butter. Great price, on top of it and reminds me of the types you were speaking of. peanut butter lover, too!
Trader Joe's Organic creamy peanut butter has a good creamy texture, and doesn't separate after you initially mix it. Perhaps add your own honey to sweeten it a bit? PB Fan
I have good news for you! Like you, I went through a phase of rejecting commercial peanut butter because it contains partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Then I learned that in fact, it contains such a tiny amount that the amount of trans fat per serving is (roughly) zero! They just add that tiny bit to keep the peanut butter from separating. So I gave up on the yucky oil-on-top organic kinds and went back to Skippy. I try to choose organic products when I can, but for peanut butter, it's just not worth it. Yippie skippy!
Have you tried Maranatha No-Stir Organic Peanut Butter? So far, its the one that works best for us. The ingredients are Organic Dry Roasted Peanuts, Organic Palm Oil, Organic Cane Sugar, Sea Salt. I've gotten it at Whole Foods, Farmer Joes, and I think Trader Joes. Christine Z
I love the peanut butter at Trader Joe's that is a mixture of peanut butter and flax seed with no sugar added. Yum! I recommend you give it a try! -Also nutty over PB
I accidentally bought some organic peanut butter with sugar in it recently --- it was really good! Too good to toss, so we ate it all immediately. I think it was either Whole Foods or Trader Joe's store brand. -anon
