Re: Jewish summer camp for entering 1st grader
We have been sending our daughter to Ramah Day Camp of the Bay Area (formerly Ramah Day Camp of the Greater East Bay), which is located in Tilden Park, for the last 3 summers. She was entering Kindergarten when the camp first started in 2000. This year we are also sending our second daughter, who is entering Kindergarten in the fall.
We have found Ramah to be the best of all worlds as it combines excellent Jewish content (learning Hebrew words, blessings and songs, understanding and practicing what it is to be a Jew), camp spirit and intimacy. The camper to counselor ratio ranges from 3-to-1 to 4-to-1, which is the lowest we've found. Ramah only employs counselors who are at least 18 years old, so the level of professionalism is high.
The small nature of the camp, around 50 kids, means that the counselors develop deep relationships with the campers and can be more attentive to safety and emotional issues. Many of the kids have not been to camp before, and that seems to make little difference. Our daughter makes new friends every summer, beginning on the first day.
Activities are varied, including sports, drama, singing, arts and crafts, nature and swimming. The Jewish programming is lots of fun -- the kids love it. The camp staff is dedicated to creating a warm, nurturing environment in a beautiful setting in Tilden. I highly recommend this camp and would be happy to answer any more questions or concerns you might have. You can also call the camp office at 510-549-9447 ext. 111. Babbie
