Air conditioning system doesn't work after one year
–Aug 22, 2022Last year we had an air conditioning installed at our house and we used a few times just fine. This year, when we start the AC, it didn’t work. The unit appears to turn on, but we discovered that the fan (on the outdoor unit) doesn’t start. If we give it a little nudge on the fan, it will start and work just fine. We researched and replaced the “start/stop capacitor” on the fan, and after initial replacement last week, it worked one time. But when we tried to start the air conditioner today, the same issue happened with fan and had to nudge it to get going. Unfortunately, our original installer has ghosted us and not responded to any calls/messages. We found him on thumbtack and realizing he may not have been certified and can’t honor his work.
Any advice on either fixing or recommending a technician who might know whats happening?
Aug 22, 2022Seeking alternatives to installing central AC
–Jul 28, 2021I live in a very small house (800 square feet.) The older I get, the less tolerant I am of heat (and just about everything else.) I just got quotes to add a 220 line and AC to my central heating. The cost would be almost $17,000. This seems outrageous. Does anyone have experience with Mini Splits and reputable installers? I’m also open to other suggestions.

Replace furnace when I install air conditioning?
April 2008
I am considering putting in air conditioning into the house I bought in Hercules. Can anyone recommend any company in particular. I have a quote from Sears and they offer 12months no payment, no interest options as well. The house is approx. 26years old. Should I replace the furnace as well or wait until that gives out? Any help appreciated.
I would seriously consider replacing the furnace at the same time that you install a central air conditioning system. The new furnaces are highly efficient, and not only decrease greenhouse gases, but also save a considerable amount of fuel. The new air conditioners are also much more efficient than the ones available only a few years ago.
When we replaced our furnace and installed central air conditioning in our El Sobrante home about 4 years ago, we employed a company called Rounds-Sosine in Richmond, and they did an excellent job. The cost was about $5000 (including the electrical work, as one needs a 220-volt circuit to run A/C), and the work was completed in just two days. We have had no trouble since; BUT, sadly, it appears that this company is no longer in business.
Get several estimates and make sure that your ductwork is in good condition (ours was). Robert
I used Hassler Heating and Air Conditioning to install our AC unit and they were great. Very communicative and showed up on time!
I have two recommendations for you as I have used both companies and they are of high quality and fine reputations. You can depend on them to the kind of work you expect and they will stand behind it. Both are local and have been in business for many years. Apple Heating and Air Conditioning is owned by a man named Bobby. He has installed furnaces and a whole house air conditioning unit for us. His number is: 510-530-2423. The other company is Atlas Heating and Air Conditioning and Kevin supervised the installation of a "minisplit" unit which combines both heat and air conditioning. However, Atlas installs separate furnaces and air conditioning units as well. Their number is: 510-488-4252. It might be a good idea to have these companies and some others have a look at your equipment, assess what is wrong and give you a bid to fix it. Prices will for sure vary.
