Camp 510
CAMP 510 is a values-driven summer day-camp for ages 6-14.
At CAMP 510, we believe in cultivating a community of makers who have the creative agency and confidence to help shape a better world. CAMPers explore the innovative and magical in studio art, tinkering, public art, food and cooking, electronics, building, soldering and welding, sewing, crafts, video, music, and more. Unique projects are carefully chosen for each week of CAMP and are scaled to be developmentally appropriate for each age group of CAMPers. Equipped with the right tools in a participatory community environment, these projects are led by professional artists and makers in the spirit of D-I-T (do it together). CAMP 510 is located on the Park Day School campus in Temescal, Oakland.
We do this camp every year and plan to do it again this year. The camp director is a local artist. The grounds are beautiful and they utilize the outdoor space a lot. It is a more structured program and many counselors are local artists and there are CITs as in many other camps. A lot of the activities are arts themed but each week has a theme, so check out the particular week. My child has fun every time they do it. The check in process can be a bit time consuming as you have to park, walk and sign your child in. (Parking is not always easy around the area.) I wish they had a drive-up/drop-off option. I thought the pandemic protocols were great last year. The usual cohort system with eating and drinking outside only and kids all masked up. We will have to see how camps respond to the changes in the guidance, but I know the camp director is also a parent and Covid conscious.
My 9 year old son did a week at 510 last summer with a friend and said it was "boring". He did some nice art projects, but didn't like that he didn't get to choose the activities he did, or the types of physical/outdoor activity. For reference, he usually goes to Trackers and does archery, hiking, and stealth, so he's not an "indoorsy" kid normally. I think the heavy structure was not to his liking.
