IPL skin treatment

Wondering if anyone has any advice about IPL or other treatments for aging skin. I'm 39 and have very fair skin--with some redness (very small/minor broken capillaries), but not roscea (I think.) As many do at this age, I've been considering getting expensive (to me) skin treatment--possibly through a provider who is offering a discount coupon--so maybe not the best provider.

I got scared looking at reviews of IPL. Have you had IPL? Do you have words of wisdom/experience to share? Do you have any recommendations about providers who offer these kinds of services? Did you do something else that worked better? 

I'm not sure I need an expensive provider. I had one experience with a discount/coupon treatment with a laser for a very minor procedure and was impressed by the instant/positive result--but the lady giving me the treatment was also surprised, which is not the most heartening sign about her experience.  

I've ruled out Obagi. It seems very expensive and you have to keep using it. We're on a budget.
