OSA Middle School Updated Review

I'd love to hear about the Middle School experience in general at OSA and neurodivergence / learning difference support, if you have experience with this area. We're considering switching our child from a traditional middle school to OSA. We are aware that we may not get in as we're not applying as a 6th grader, even though we live in Oakland.

How popular / difficult is it to to get into the theater, voice, audio production programs? These are the three areas that our child is interested in but we know we have to pick two.

I have read concerning reviews about the following and would love to hear from current/recent families. Thank you!

  • Academics are weak. Kids are not prepared for high school especially if they don't stay with OSA for high school.
  • Middle school kids don't get the same opportunity as high school kids especially for theater
  • Recess/lunch is short and not great (no recess)
  • A lot of homework and busy work (worksheets)
  • Kids with cell phones at school
  • What do you love and do not love about OSA?
  • Experience with support for neurodivergence
