ankle replacement at Kaiser

Broke my ankle decades ago in a car wreck, and at this point I'm nearly bone-on-bone.  The primary treatment option is total ankle replacement (TAR), with fusion as the secondary option.

I'm not wild about surgery, having had operations that didn't go so well despite the surgeons' superb reputation.  TAR is less well established than hip or knee replacement, plus the recovery time is very long.  On the other hand, walking is getting steadily worse.

My questions are:

  •  Have you or someone you know had ankle replacement surgery, can you give me any perspective?
  • Are you familiar with (and can you recommend) any of the Kaiser surgeons who do this surgery?  In particular, Dr. Joseph Dewayne-Dickinson, who seems to be the guy at Oakland Kaiser for this surgery.

Thanks!
