I was wondering if anyone had experience with the Lawrence Berkeley Lab Science Exploration summer camp? They seem to run one-week sessions from July 12-August 20 this year, for kids entering 2nd to 6th grades. I'm looking for camps for my son entering 4th grade. Is this camp fun and well organized? Do children who don't have a friend there do well? Many thanks! Sima
My daughters went to the LBL camp, but not for a couple of years now. In my experience, it was fun, interesting, and definitely a camp that it was okay to go to even without a friend. It's not deluxe, but they went swimming and on a few other field trips. They liked visiting people's labs -- I would recommend it. Also, you get to drive through the gates and see what's up there! Announcement from Summer 1999
Parents at the Lawrence Berkeley National Labortory are again running the Science Exploration Camp this summer. The camp runs from 26 Jul to 3 Sep and is open to school-age children (entering 2nd through 6th grade) of UCB students and employees. Currently the week of 23-27 Aug is full. Tuition is $190 per week.
The core program will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a morning science component and afternoon recreational activities. The science component is based upon weekly themes and will be held at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Hall of Science, and UC Botanical Gardens in Berkeley, California. Recreational activities will take place in local parks, swimming, etc. LBNL buses, UC charter buses and/or public transportation will be used for transportation.
Before and after camp care from 7:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. is included in the fees. During these hours, quiet activities will be provided. Every effort will be made to accommodate those parents that begin work before 8:00 a.m.
We also have a need for camp counselors to work during all six weeks of the camp. Applicants should be entering 12th grade or older and should (1) have experience working with children ages 7 through 11, (2) enjoy working with children, (3) be able to make children feel welcome in a new setting, and (4) have excellent references. Basic swimming skills are required, and an interest in science and water safety instruction are desirable. First Aid and CPR training will be provided. Re: Last week of summer
I think that BNL (formerly LBL) may be running a camp just for that last week of summer before school starts -- I know that's what they did last year. It's probably open to UC employees, as well.
