Cal State East Bay Summer Reading Skills Programs
July 2012
Has anyone enrolled their child in the California State University East Bay Summer Reading Skills Program? I am considering it for my 7 year-old who is entering 2nd grade in the Fall 2012 and would love some feedback from other parents.
While it wasn't their summer reading program, I enrolled my son in one of the Cal State East Bay reading courses. The class met weekly at the UC Berkeley campus, parents attend along with their child. I thought the instructors had a good approach and I was enthusiastic. However my son was not. Even at the young age of 7 or 8 he resented attending class on a weekend. So I don't think he got much out of it. Other kids in the class were more engaged, so I guess it depends on your child. mom of a non-academic
CSU Reading Skills Program for entering 1st grader
May 2012
Can anyone offer any feedback, positive or negative, about the Cal State East Bay Reading Programs? I found the flyer for their summer sessions at my daughter's school but her teacher didn't know anything about the program. I am thinking of sending her to the session for entering first graders this summer but would like to hear some reviews from other parents whose children have participated in the program to see if it is worthwhile. Anon
We did this program for both of my children when they were entering 1st grade. It's a half day a week for about 4-6 weeks, and parents attends the 2nd half of the session with their child. We valued the skills we learned to assist our kids and we applied them through 3rd grade. You learn how to constructively cue your kids while they read out loud and keep everything upbeat when they begin to struggle. Equally important, you'll gain an understanding of what type of book constitutes a reader, a book that promotes reading skills. Surprisingly, most books that are simplified for children to read don't meet this criteria. Berkeley Parent

Re: Reading programs for rising 2nd grader over the summer
Reading mom- You can find some programs for reading specifically-CSUEB has exactly the program you are looking for (a.m. reading program for children your son's age).
The Institute for Reading Development program is not a research-backed program. If you are worried about your child's reading it is best to get an evaluation to figure out what is going on with your child's reading and get advice tailored to your child's needs. A lot goes into skilled reading: background knowledge, vocabulary, decoding skills, processing speed, visual processing. Lindamood Bell has a relatively low-cost assessment. It is usually $500 but you can almost always get half off by looking on the web or simply asking for a discount. Also, many educational therapists like myself do reading evaluations. A reading evaluation can help you understand the source of your child's reading difficulties and provide recommendations.
