The Sun Will Rise Foundation exists because Robyn Houston-Bean’s twenty year old son Nicholas Bean died to an accidental polysubstance overdose in May of 2015. Trying to find purpose and a reason to go on after a traumatic sudden loss, she knew that when she could function again, she would do something in his memory. Knowing the value of peer grief support groups, and the need for some in her area, she decided to start The Sun Will Rise for those that have experienced the death of someone they care about due to overdose or other substance use related causes.

Randi Schalet is a licensed psychologist living in Berkeley, CA. Schalet’s grief journey began three years ago when her 26-year-old son, Kealynd, died from an overdose. Recently, Randi became the first person in the Berkeley region to facilitate a peer grief support group for The Sun Will Rise (TSWR).

For more information on this in-person meeting, as well as, Virtual Peer Grief Support Groups and Events offered by TSWR, go to www.thesunwillrise.org

TSWR provides a range of grief support services including multiple monthly in-person and/or online peer grief support meetings, free monthly events, social get togethers and workshops both in person and virtual and a private Facebook group. The groups are open to anyone 18+. Some of these are specialty group meetings that include a mom’s only group, a partner/spouse group, a grandparents group, a men's only group, multiple loss group, a sibling group, a substance use related suicide death group, an LGBTQ+ group, a young person group and a people in recovery group.

We are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment where individuals can connect with others who have had similar experiences and receive the support that they are entitled to without stigma or shame.

At The Sun Will Rise Foundation, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to receive support, experience healing and to not feel alone.
