Who is This For?

• 4th to 9th Graders
• Students who can read but may lack confidence in comprehension or in discussing their ideas with peers
• Those eager to strengthen their reading skills in a supportive community
• Creative, enthusiastic individuals ready to explore new ideas
• Learners willing to approach reading with an open mind and earnest effort

Location: Mentoring Academy High School, Downtown Berkeley

What We’ll Do:

• Read Together: Explore a book in various formats: paper, audiobook, and Kindle.
• Weekly Assignments: Engage with the text and check in on progress and motivation.
• Art Projects: Create connections and deepen understanding through fun art activities.
• Group Discussions: Share challenges and strategies to overcome obstacles in reading.
• Focus on Growth: No penalties for incomplete reading—just opportunities to learn!

Goals:

• To provide guidance and problem-solving support
• To create a safe space for young readers to learn and grow
• Students should have basic reading skills but do not need to be confident to succeed!

Why This Matters: Reading is essential for navigating life—whether it’s filling out forms, applying for jobs, or simply enjoying stories. Developing strong reading skills enriches life experiences and opens doors to understanding the world.

Schedule: 

Five 90-minute sessions at variable times, based on interest and enrollment

• 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
• 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
• 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Cost:

• $325 for 5 sessions (includes book copies and art supplies)
• Students will need to bring their own phones and/or iPads.
