Moving from 2 naps to 1 nap for 22 month old
Hello!
What is the best way to bring two naps to one nap for a 22 month old? we are considering preschool when our baby turns 2, and most preschools have their nap time from 1 PM to 3 PM. My babies naptimes are below.
1 nap- 9:30-11 AM
2 nap- 2:30-3:30 PM
Bedtime- 7:00 PM
Wake up - 5:30-6 AM
We have tried moving his bedtime to 8 PM or so, but he still wakes up at 5:30 AM. We are morning people so that’s not really a problem (although we are super tired by 9 AM and we need to go to work).
Looking for fellow parents advice. Thanks in advance

Hi!
I’d start with one nap around 10:30-1 and move bedtime a little earlier. Then after a while start pushing nap later little by little until it aligns with the school nap.
The preschool we sent both of our kids to also does a 1pm nap, but we were never able to do a nap that late at home. When our 2 year old naps at home we follow his cues and he usually starts his nap between 11am and 12:30pm. This allows for a much longer nap too, often up to 3 hours on the weekend. I wouldn't worry so much about what time the preschool does naps and focus on what works for you right now. Once we switched to 1 nap, both of our early risers had early bedtimes and they were fast asleep between 6:15 and 6:30pm (this required us to give them a meal earlier than when we eat, but it's all temporary!). Their wakeups were around 6:30am. We've always followed the sleep begets sleep model and put them to bed as soon as they seem tired. I would slowly start pushing your early nap time later in the day- start with about 15mins later a day or an hour later a week until you've made it to about 11:30am or 12pm. Don't be afraid to do a super early bedtime when they're tired. From my experience (anecdotal of course) the wake up time is the most fixed and there's not much you can do to change it (though they do slowly get later as they near 5/6).
You are on the right track about dropping the morning nap. Aim for one nap 1.5-2 hours long at 11am or noon. To get there start shifting the morning nap slightly later each day and cutting the afternoon nap shorter at the same time. Give yourself a few weeks to make the transition. As the afternoon nap gets dropped, make bedtime 30mins earlier. Going to one nap should solve the early wake up problem. People have different views on this but we generally didn’t let day time naps run longer than 2.5 hours. We would wake him up and emphasize good overnight sleep (when he could sleep as long as he wanted) and that led to good, consistent overnight sleeping. We knew it was time to drop the day nap when his bedtime started slipping past 930pm.
One alternative might be to wake your baby up earlier from nap 1, shifting nap 2 up and getting your baby used to stretching the last wake window out more. As you wake your baby up earlier from nap 1, nap 2 should also lengthen, and eventually you can drop nap 1. Take this with a grain of salt since our baby is 9 mo old and we're not there yet, but this was the advice from a sleep consultant we had worked with when we asked her how we should approach the future.
