  • Hello,

Does anyone have any experience with delivering at Eden Medical Center? My husband and I are thinking about switching to John Muir Medical Center since its closer to our home, but we really like our OB/GYN who practices at Eden Medical Center. We're just not familiar with the facility.  Any advise or recommendation is much appreciated :)

I delivered our baby in May 2018 at Eden in Castro Valley and it was a wonderful experience! Everyone at the Labor and Delivery department is extremely helpful, great at their jobs and it all went really smooth for us. I even quite liked the food that I was served those 2 days :-)

Not sure about the nursery thing, but I gave birth at Eden Medical Center in May and I highly recommend it. It's still a part of the Sutter system, but a completely different vibe to Alta Bates. The birthing room had peanut balls and yoga balls, a tub for laboring, aromatherapy, and even a galaxy light for ambiance. The nurses were so knowledgeable and supportive, helping me labor in different positions. They also had wireless monitoring that I was encouraged to use until I got my epidural. Dr. Wigginton delivered my baby and she took great care to protect my body.

As far as changing providers, I feel like I never established a good relationship with my OB prior to delivery, and she didn't end up delivering my baby anyway. You might need to call and ask for their policies around late transfers though.

Hi Nora, I gave birth in May at Eden Medical in Castro Valley - it's about a 20-25 minute drive from Oakland except for afternoon rush hour. For my prenatal care, I went through Stanford Castro Valley. I saw the same doctor (Dr. Kragie) for all but one appointment - not at all the "revolving door" medical model. I had a great experience with her as my primary OB care provider, as well as with the labor and delivery team at Eden. The Labor and Delivery ward at Eden is super small, I think it's only 4 or 5 rooms.

I didn't ask about nursery since we left the hospital ~24 hours after birth, and people were coming in every few hours for something or another anyways.

I had a hard time finding reviews for Eden when I was deciding about OB care, so I wanted to share mine! I had a very positive unmedicated delivery (2nd child) at Eden Medical Center in May 2024 with Dr. Kragie, who I saw for all but one of my OB appointments through Stanford Castro Valley.

The labor and delivery ward at this hospital is really small - only 4 or 5 beds. I was scheduled for a morning induction that was moved to the afternoon due to space. I checked in and had the final positioning scan. I had expressed interest in laboring unmedicated as long as I was not having complications. My first nurse recommended I do a circuit to encourage baby to rotate fully and begin descending - both my nurses and the doctor seemed knowledgeable on how to support labor through positioning. Once active labor started, I was supported to labor in my position of choice. Our amazing nurse, Sandra, set up the room for me by dimming the monitor, turning off the lights, and even bringing in a star projector machine! My care team (OB, nurse, doula) had me change positions throughout my labor to encourage progression and I was able to have an uncomplicated unmedicated hospital delivery.

This was a night and day difference compared to my first birth experience at a hospital in LA. I'm very grateful to the Eden Medical staff for their excellent care and expertise.

One of the biggest pros for me was the food options available - you call in and order food during the day whenever you want and it was all pretty good!

Also - Dr. Kragie is honestly my favorite care provider that I've ever had. She's excellent at what she does and always considers the patient and new research when recommending care decisions. I had several medium-high risk factors going for me with this pregnancy and I felt confident with her as my care provider throughout.

So sorry you're dealing with this--that's and added stress you definitely don't need right now!
For what it's worth, I've had both my babies at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley (a Sutter Health hospital) and love my OBGYN there, Dr. Nguyen. I've also met a bunch of other OBGYNs there and they are all amazing. In my experience, they've been really responsive to messages and phone calls and would usually get back to me within a day.
With my last baby (who was born this January), we also didn't receive the results of our genetic screening when we thought we would (we did the CA screening program). I messaged my doctor, they followed up with the CA program and had the results within a week. For whatever reason, the results didn't make it into the online system until about 2 months ago (so AFTER the baby was born...), but we were informed of the results over phone as soon as our doc had them.
Hope you receive your results soon and find a doctor who supports you and makes you feel well cared for!
