Dyslexia/Dysgraphia Support

Hello,

We have a 3rd grader with severe dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD. She has an IEP and we are also seeking additional support outside of what the district provides because she is so far behind with reading/writing and practicing at home is always a struggle. We are in need of additional help from a professional. Strategies for Learning was recommended and we reached out but there is a 7-9 week wait list for in-person support. We also reached out to a few recommended individuals who are also fully booked. We have heard Lindamood-Bell is good and are waiting to hear back. We will have to wait and see if there are openings and find out if the cost is something we can include in our budget as I have heard it is very expensive. Wondering if anyone has had success with Barton Method or has any other recommendations. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I might reach out to Classroom Matters about tutoring; they specialize in ADHD/executive function though I'm not sure about the additional challenges you seek to address. Might be worth a call.

My 4th grader child has similar profile as your daughter.  Here's a resource to start looking into: https://eblireads.com/ebli-webinars/ I have used Barton and looked into Lindamood-Bell.  My son has made tremendous progress.  He is reading Box Car children books pretty fluently now.  Box Car children is about 3rd grade reading level, so he is still not at grade level, yet.  I have confidence with the EBLI that he'll be at grade level soon.  It's been a long road.

Highly recommend looking into primitive reflex integration. We used Dr Samantha Voss in Alameda who solves most of the issues you mentioned for our kids it was breathtaking and mind blowing !!

I had a kiddo in a similar situation. Public schools did not work for her - they simply did not have the services she needed. We did private programs, summer programs, Lindamood Bell, and eventually transferred to school to provide support (that is the short version). We did not find Lindamood Bell effective for our kids and it was very expensive and time consuming too (we did it for six months). It has to be a match for your kid. We had the best success with people trained with Ortin Gillingham. Jackie Cohen is a tutor who worked one on one with all our kids (they all have dyslexia) and it was much less expensive, personal, and moved them ahead just as quickly. My current kid started with her in January, first grade and still couldn't master her letters. It's March and she is now doing early reader books. Jackie's contact is JacquelineCohenLearning at gmail.com. Her number is 510-928-9628. Her website is jackiecohenlearning.com. Good luck.

Yes, the Barton method is excellent. I would advise you to find an Educational Therapist (not a tutor or tutoring center)- check the website https://www.aetonline.org/ to find one near you. Lindamood Bell may help for some but was a huge waste of money for us. The money spent on ET was hard to do for a while, but it isn't for always - and the investment is TOTALLY worth it. Once they get the help they need and learn to ask for accomodations it gets much easier. Hang in there! Find a great ET for them to start working with bi-weekly and over the summer and you will really see the difference very soon. Good luck!
