Sacred Roots Wellness
Community SubscriberAn intimate and sweet summer camp for kids that gets your child's creative juices flowing in the garden of West Oakland's City Slicker Farms. Some of the fun includes a daily yoga class, learning about plants, making art, herbal medicine & more!
I'm recommending this summer camp with Sacred Roots Wellness because my 3 kids (ages 5, 7, 10) have had Tanya as their teacher / chosen Aunt for nearly 8 years. Beyond Tanya's wide breadth of knowledge and 15 years of teaching experience, she makes the subjects FUN. After one class with Tanya, I remember watching the kids put together a solar-powered mini wooden carousel, and my oldest was able to explain the basics of how solar power worked ... that is Tanya's magic. She is able to make STEM (science, tech, engineering, and math) subjects entertaining and relevant to their lives and interests. As a science/art/yoga teacher who is African American, Tanya is also committed to empowering all our kids, creating a safe and welcoming space, and including a lens for social justice. This year's camp will include a variety of kid-friendly ethnobotany: plant identification/harvesting, nature journaling/drawing, and herbal medicine making -- as well as jewelry-making, yoga, and games. The camp (located at City Slicker Farms) is a local vegetable/fruit farm with a playground on site, benches/tables, a lawn for games / meeting space, an outdoor kitchen, bathrooms, and chicken coops. I'm excited about all of it, obviously :-)
