Is Albany Middle School's math level acceptable?
My daughter just entered AMS as sixth grader. She has attended private schools all her life until this point. She is enjoying AMS very much, making new friends and participating in all these clubs that are available to her for the first time. However, she dreads math and told me that they are teaching topics that she learned in 2nd and 3rd grade. I didn't believe her at first until i checked her homework, and found that they are just doing areas and perimeters of rectangles. Just rectangles and nothing else. Shouldn't 6th graders be doing something more advanced or am I expecting too much? To her credit she did ask the teacher if she could do more challenging problems, to which the teacher replied that she may do so at her own time outside of school. According to my daughter, a few of her classmates are really bored in math. Is this dumbing down every student to the lowest common denominator? I think it's good to review old topics, but they shouldn't be 2 to 3 years behind.

You might check out Johns Hopkins distance learning. At least, that's what it was called 15 years ago when we faced this issue.
