Dentists Who Accept DeltaCare USA Insurance

  • We have DeltaCare USA dental coverage for our children through Kaiser.  The dental offices that I used to take my daughter that accepted this insurance no longer do.  My daughter is 6 and has some cavities, so it's pretty important to me to find a good dentist and a dental office that is child friendly.  I also have an 18 mos old that I would like to take for a dental visit.  I have searched through reviews for some of the dental offices on the DeltaCare provider website. I got pretty discouraged when most dentist reviews were negative and the dental offices did not seem to be child friendly, although I've set the filter for dentists who specialize in children.  I know there have to be some good dentists out there that accept DeltaCare USA.  I would really appreciate recommendations for pediatric dentists in the Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito area.

I was in a similar situation and found this office that takes kids and adults, which I wanted so we can have just one place. It’s small but they are really great with kids and my daughter loves going. https://www.berkeleyhillsdentist.com

I would highly recommend POW Dental in Albany. Our teenage son has a huge fear of needles. He needed to have some cavities filled at his regular dentist and had a panic attack and they could not even work on him. We eventually received a referral to POW Dental and they were amazing. We had a consultation first, and the procedure was done on a different day. The office staff were so kind and helpful and the consultation was very reassuring. When he had the procedure done, they had him in a quiet, private room with limited noise and distractions; the dentist was so understanding and gentle and somehow managed to do the fillings without even giving him shots (the cavities were not very deep). I never thought that could happen in a million years. It was a real lifesaver for us. I am sorry I don't have the dentist's name but I think he is the main dentist there.

Once we went there I regretted that we had not taken my son there from a very young age. We also have Delta Care USA (through UC Berkeley). I'd really recommend contacting them to see if it would be a good fit for your family. Best of luck!

Have you checked out Aloha Pediatric Dentistry in Berkeley? I’m not sure whether they take DeltaCare, but we love this place and Dr. Katsura! He was my husband’s dentist when he was younger and now he’s our kids’ dentist.

We had the same challenge and ended up going to Dr. Sabbadini at Pinole Pediatric Dentists. It was farther than I wanted to go to (but not that bad!) and I loved the office and the staff. Very kid centric and gentle. Much better than our old dentist in Albany. Highly recommend.

While they are not a pediatric office with toys and all that, in searching for a place that took Delta Dental, we switched from our pediatric dentistry to Newbury Dental in Oakmore off Park. The primary dentists are both moms with young children. They are absolutely amazing. My kids had a great experience. Maybe worth bringing an audiobook for them to listen to during the procedure since they don’t have cartoons on TV or anything like that.

  • My kids are on DeltaCare USA through Kaiser, and I'm really struggling to find a dentist for them who a) doesn't have terrible reviews and b) has appointments available. The one office I liked said in July that they were scheduling for November at that point, and that's just to get an initial visit to be referred to an oral surgeon for some extractions we need done. I'm at my wit's end - are there any decent dentists who take DeltaCare AND new patients? Even better if they can do extractions in-house, but we'll take what we can get at this point. It doesn't need to be a pediatric dentist. We're in Oakland but willing to drive just about anywhere in the Bay Area to make it work.

[Moderator note] Here is some past advice about this: https://www.berkeleyparentsnetwork.org/recommend/dentists-who-take-deltacare-usa-insurance

Honestly, I'd grab the November appointment as you continue your search. Our family goes to three different practices, and like most, all three closed for three months and two just reopened in June, so they're catching up on a three-month backlog. The third still hasn't reopened. In normal times, our kids' practice schedules several months out, so November sounds just about right. That said, many families are opting to cancel in the current climate, so if you get on a cancellation call list, you may be able to grab a much earlier time slot.

My teen daughter has the same insurance and has been seen once at Bright Now Dental on Edgewater in Oakland near the airport. They were fine, she needed a referral to get her wisdom teeth removed. I then found Pinole Oral Surgery by calling DeltaCare which was one of only two oral surgeons in the entire bay area accepting new patients. They were great, my daughter had her wisdom teeth removed a month ago by Dr. Clayman and all went well. Because of COVID we have not been to Bright Now Dental for a cleaning yet. The oral surgery was really needed as she was in a lot of pain.

  • Does anyone have a positive, kid experience with one of these dentists below?  My very active 7 y.o. son needs some cavities filled for baby teeth.
We've gone to Aloha and POW Dental for cleanings but their costs for fillings are high.  If we want dental coverage for our kid under Kaiser,  we're restricted to using these providers under the extremely limited Deltacare USA network.  We can't access the broader Delta Dental network nor see a pediatric dentist unless referred by one of these providers.

We're new to Kaiser as of March 2019 and new to Berkeley as of Aug 2018. Initially I was pleased for pediatric dental coverage but so far the customer experience with Delta Dental has been really disappointing to say the least.  3 offices just told me they're not accepting new patients (one hasn't accepted in 3 years); I deleted from the list below.  Caution to anyone considering Kaiser who's also attracted by this so called benefit.

    DeltaCare USA providers per www.deltains.com

In Berkeley: Western Dental Services, California Dental Group, Refresh Dental.

    In Albany:  Shadan Jabali DDS.

In El Cerrito: Dentists of El Cerrito Plaza Dental, Firoozeh Lavassani, Rodney Kim, Western Dental Services.

In Richmond: Bay Dental and  Winning Smile Dental Group.

In Oakland: Oakland Smile Center, Uptown Dental Group, Franklin Dental Care, Western Dental (Broadway), Western Dental (International Blvd).

    Thanks in advance!

We go to Firoozeh Lavassani for exactly the reason you describe. She's been great with both of our kids, starting around 3 years old.

I used to have the crappy delta dental plan through Kaiser for myself about 10 years ago. I saw Dr. Jabali, and later had to have the filling redone by a competent dentist.

My daughter and I love Rodney Kim in El Cerrito, we've been going off and on (depending on changes in insurance) for 17 years. He doesn't try to do anything "extra," just gets the teeth cleaned and checks for problems and we're out the door. When my daughter was 2-3 years old, however, he said that if he found any cavities he didn't have equipment small enough to fill them. So not sure about a 7 year old, so you should check with him.

We were in the same position, needing a Delta Care dentist for two (slightly older) children.  We chose Dr. Shadan Jabali, and haven't looked back. She's been the kids' dentist for over 10 years, and has become my husband's dentist as well.

She's from India and is very smart.  She's "no nonsense," but kind. My husband tells me that the dental patient areas are "no frills" (one room for two patients), but it's never bothered him.  She knows when to make referrals to oral surgeons and the like, and her staff is on top of all paperwork.

Finally, Dr. Jabali has a much nicer waiting room than my own "fancy" dentist (I have better dental coverage than the rest of my family), and parking is never a problem on her residential Albany street... which is nevertheless close enough to San Pablo to not be off the beaten track.

WARNING: Dr. Jabali has limited hours these days... something like Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (but don't quote me).  So be patient... if you leave a message, her receptionist will get back to you.

As an adult with DeltaCare (not taking my kid), I've had a terrible experience with Refresh Dental. Their dentists turn over every few months (I've seen someone different every time I've gone), they have a ridiculous amount of mandatory add on costs (mandatory $25 oral cancer screening EVERY time I go for a cleaning??Really??), and recently they told me I needed a filling replaced which was done right before I switched to them (3 years ago). My old dentist kindly saw me for a second opinion and was absolutely clear there was no problem. He suggested that dentists who get such low reimbursement (like DeltaCare dentists) have to come up with work they can charge you for since their reimbursement rates are so poor. I wouldn't recommend Refresh. The only thing they do really well is a very friendly receptionist who writes herself notes about you and asks friendly follow up questions so you feel like there is a "personal touch" ("How was that vacation you took right after we last saw you?", etc.)

  • Does anyone know of a good dentist that takes Delta Care USA HMO? I'm sure they are out there, but when I look on yelp I am having trouble finding any that take Delta Care USA HMO and have good ratings. I found one, had to wait a month to be enrolled with the office and then was told by that office that they were extremely overbooked and were not taking new patients. I know that Yelp is often not the full story, but would I love some positive recommendations to start with!

Being in the dental industry, I have some insight for you.  As you know, your insurance, Delta Care, is an HMO.  Most of the good dentists aren't contracted with this insurance because the reimbursement rates are so low.  For instance, a dentist who is contracted with an HMO may receive $300 for a crown whereas most PPO insurances pay three times that amount.  So the sweat shops like Western Dental whose dentists aren't well trained are usually contracted with the HMO in order to receive more patients.

Ideally, you should try to get a better insurance that is not an HMO but that is probably not an option.  It sounds like you have already cross referenced all the dentists that are listed on the website as providers with Yelp and didn't find a good one.  I can recommend an excellent dentist who I think is contracted with your insurance but I would call to confirm.  Dr. Ali Mola at:

    145 E 14th St Ste 100San Leandro, CA 94577-1661(510) 587-9400.  Good luck.

My children have DeltaCare and I know, the pickings are slim.  But I took them to Dr. Lavassani on Kearney St. in El Cerrito and she was wonderful.  The office is modest in size and appearance, but very clean and professional, with digital X-rays, etc. We had to wait about 20 mins. for our appt. to start (this was at the end of the day), but my kids liked the dentist and that is saying a lot for them!  Good luck.  For my family, who has never had dental insurance before Covered CA started insuring children, this was a savings of $600 to get cleanings, xrays, and exams for 2 kids!

I don't know what insurance they take, but I can tell you that Roger Koppel on Solano Ave in Berkeley is the world's best dentist. Give them a call at 510.527.9564.

My family has the same Delta Dental HMO insurance and found Dr. Poyan at Alamo Smiles after a lot of research. It's also a chain dental group (aka Western Dental) however it doesn't feel that way. The office is new(er), the staff is great, and she's wonderful. My family (two boys, 7 and 12) has been seeing her for two years now and no complaints.

I have this insurance also, and I don't like it! I ended up going to Oakland Smile Dental. Experience was OK, but they are always looking to pile on extra services.

RE:

If you have the option of choosing Delta Dental PPO instead of DeltaCare--some employers offer both, but the PPO costs more--they are in network for several local pediatric practices (including Uptown Pediatrics in Oakland, where our kids go). I've found the DeltaCare network pretty lousy in general. For a couple of years when we didn't have the PPO plan as an option, we just paid out of pocket and it was also pretty reasonable.
