Re: Interracial family seeking truly diverse church
Check out Plymouth UCC at the intersection of Oakland and Monte Vista in Oakland! Although it may be smaller than you were hoping, it is a very diverse, warm and caring community--as a lesbian couple with young mixed-race children, we have found a home here. The music is great, too, with some fantastic jazz performances! Services start at 11 a.m., and there is a good fellowship/light lunch after. They even like our rambunctious kids!

Re: Family friendly church for a newbie
Try a UCC congregation that is Open and Affirming. The O & A designation means that the congregation is welcoming of gays and lesbians, and so is likely to be fairly open on other issues, as well. We attend Plymouth UCC in Oakland, near the Harrison exit off I-580, and find it to be very friendly, racially diverse, and welcoming of small children! The music program is excellent, also--mostly professionals, very upbeat. It's small--about 40 people most Sundays, and is not ''High Church'' or formal, so hopefully you wouldn't find it too intimidating. New Spirit Church (UCC/MCC)on the Pacific School of Religion campus (1798 Scenic Ave. in Berkeley)is also very friendly and might fit your needs for space and tolerance, as well as a little closer to you (?). Don't be put off by the location! Good luck on your journey!
