2019 Housekeeper rates
Hi,
I would like to get an idea of how much a housekeeper should get compensated. I was reading previous threads but they are quite old. What do you pay your housekeeper, how big is your home, and do you have a minimum time requirement that they must stay in the home for? I know some cleaners work alone and will obviously need to stay longer, and others work as part of a team.
Thank you in advance.

Our house has 2 bedrooms, 1 bath. Our long-term, highly trusted expert cleaner comes every two weeks and works alone. She's welcome to take as much or as little time as she needs; we've been her clients for more than a decade and she knows better than we do what needs to be done. We pay her $170 plus transit costs.
I think most housekeepers charge by the house, not by the hour. My long-time housekeeper typically does one house in the morning and one in the afternoon, but I think on some days she has 3 houses if they are smaller. Most of her clients are weekly but she does have some that are every 2 weeks. I pay my housekeeper $150 each week. It takes her and her two helpers 2.5-3 hours to clean my 5br 4ba house, so that works out to $50-60/hour split three ways. I try to give her a raise every couple years and I'm probably overdue.
We pay our house keeper $150 every two weeks for about 3 hours of cleaning. Our home is single story, 3bed/2bath. Took us a long time to find someone who accepted Venmo payments (and hot cash-only which is such a hassle!). Let me know if you need a referral. :)
I have used the services of a women owned collective for over 10 years. They have a regular service which they outlined when I first hired them, which clarifies what they do on a regular basis. Anything extra, like cleaning the oven, windows, laundry, etc. must be arranged in advance for an additional charge. A regular team of two worker-owners comes every two weeks for 3 hours at $50/hr ($25/hr per worker). I tip each worker $20/visit, $100 each Safeway gift card at Thanksgiving, and $200 each at Christmas. I have a 3-bedroom + study, 2 1/2 bath home. I worked as a housekeeper in high school. It's hard work. They really deserve to earn more, but it's what I can budget for now.
I have a 3BR/2Bath house. My housekeeper charges by the house and she works alone. It takes her 3 hours to clean it and I pay $110 so that comes out to about $35/hour.
I started out paying her what she asked and then have given her $10 raise every year without her asking because she is AMAZING. I also give her a large end-of-year bonus ($500).
We were paying ours (a team of 3) $200 to clean a 3/2 and they stayed for about 2.5-3 hours.
We have a 3BR/2.5BA house. When I inquired, the going rate was about $150 (sometimes they charged more for the first cleaning, like $200) for once a month, and thereafter, reduced if more times a month (i.e. $120-130/twice a month). I inquired with 3 teams (all of them worked in pairs), and they did not charge by the hour, nor by the number of people cleaning. I think that makes sense, as they essentially charged for the work to be done on the house. They all were fine doing a free consultation to come look at your home and then give you a price (actually, I don't think they want to quote a price until they see the home). Hope that helps.
We paid our amazing and magical housekeeper $150. She came every other week and every corner and surface seen and unseen shined. She even did dishes, laundry and folded and put away laundry and even organized closets. She retired. We never knew how good we had it until she was gone. 3 bedroom / 1 bathroom / 1400 sq. house. The new people we hired charged us $150 but did not do dishes or laundry and then when we moved to 3.5 bedroom / 2 bathroom 1800 sq house, they wanted to charge us $230. We were shocked. We went out and found a new cleaner who charges $130 but is not very good. She does not dust higher shelves or corners or under cushions and furniture. She is forgetful and leaves windows open and door unlocked sometimes. She breaks stuff and lies that she didn't do it. She damaged our floor but doesn't even say sorry. I can't wait to find a new person who can clean better.
