What’s happening now?
Shelters continue to be overcrowded and overwhelmed. This is due to a lack of accessible and affordable spay and neuter services, an increase in backyard breeding, and a host of other compounding issues. Many are impacted by the economy and surrender their furry family members to the shelter, dump them, or they are winding up there as strays. It’s a sad state, for sure.
Due to restraints on space, animals are being fast-tracked to being euthanized. Despite their potential to be healthy, loving, and adoptable dogs they become the first at risk of being put on ‘euthanasia’ or kill lists.
We Formed a Collective! When we considered how to support the animals most in need, we wanted to take a strategic approach rather than being reactionary. Therefore, we launched Animal Advocates of Contra Costa County (AAACCC) in response to the problems we chronically face which have begun to take a toll on stranded un-adopted and at-risk animals, pet stewards, and animal lovers. It is our mission to improve the lives of all abandoned and owned animals in our county. Our collective helps rescue groups, works with volunteers, provides outreach in the community through public speaking, and continues to advocate for improved policies by working with elected officials and professionals in the shelter system.
We’re optimistic that all these efforts are making a huge impact on the animals. Fortunately, due to the efforts of members of our group, we've been able to save almost ALL the at-risk animals on Contra Costa's Animal Services kill and high-risk list not just this year but the past six years–but it takes time, perseverance, and of course, funding.
This includes finding rescue groups to ‘tag’ the animals as well as ready, willing, and ‘vetted’ fosters and adopters. Sometimes the animals need boarding, transportation, food, and other basics on top of medical support. But it’s getting harder to help. In addition to meeting the above costs, there are often unanticipated medical expenses and funding needed for obedience training so that the animals succeed in their new family environment. Currently, this funding comes from crisis donations and out-of-pocket from the volunteers directly. Those are running out.
To this end, and to support these efforts, some AACCC members have joined forces creating our first annual Citizens for Rescue Live Auction and Winter Party. Our event will be held on Sunday, February 23rd, 2025 from 1pm - 4:30pm in Richmond, CA. (Details with ticket purchase).
How You Can Help! We're supporting Len Welsch's 501c3 rescue, Stitch in Time Animal Rescue (STAR). Len's organization is at the front line saving animals and like so many rescues, they are facing severe financial strain and urgently need funds to continue their important life-affirming work. He's even helping some of the animals who have survived but need help from the LA fires!
We would be honored if you joined us for the event (Tickets here) or check out our amazing auction, here.
Please share this event information with your friends and community who love the dogs!
Thank You!
Woofs and Wags,
Bara Sapir and Corinne Cooper
