Shawn has a patient but focused manner to engage frustrated, reluctant learners. Sessions focus on the student's academic skills and self-concept, leading to improvement in motivation and self-direction.
Work Completion-Homework Hassles
Assessment of executive function areas of organization, time management, and resilience. Skill building in a step-by-step approach to build habits to track, complete, and turn in assignments. Overcome resistance and frustration by identifying specific areas of struggle and finding solutions that work.
Reading
Overwhelmed by the volume of reading, struggling with learning new vocabulary, minimal retention of material, and low test scores can be areas of reading challenges. Assessment and skill building is conducted as needed including the areas of core decoding, text organization patterns, comprehension strategies, and long-term retention.
Writing
Poor sentence and paragraph structure, writing minimal content, misunderstanding the assignment, and being baffled by essay planning, are typical areas of writing challenges. Assessment and skill building is conducted as needed including the areas of core spelling, sentence, and paragraph methods; diving deeper into concepts and changing from commenting on a topic to expressing a specific argument; working inductively from having many thoughts and fragments to finding a thesis and organization for an essay.
