Lyrics From Song Don Gato

Archived Q&A and Reviews

Jan 2000

I was wondering if anyone has heard of the song which begins
Oh, Senor Don Gato was a cat,
On a high red roof Don Gato sat,
he went there to read a letter meow, meow, meow,
where the reading light was better meow, meow, meow.
'Twas a love note for Don Gato!

I know most of this song which is a great delight for my son, but I have forgotten the last few verses. These are critical because it completes the story of what happens to Don Gato -- a happy ending. Thanks!

I adore you, wrote the lady cat,
Who was fluffy, white, and nice and fat,
Oh there was no sweeter kitty, meow, meow meow,
In the country or the city
And she said she'd wed Don Gato.
Oh Don Gato jumped so happily,
He fell off the roof and broke his knee,
Broke his ribs and all his whiskers, meow, meow meow,
And his little solar plexis, meow, meow, meow,
Ay caramba! cried Don Gato.
Well the doctors all came on the run,
Just to see if something could be done, ....
But in spite of everything they tried,
Poor senor Don Gato up and died, ....
When the funeral passed the market square
Such a smell of fish was in the air,
Though his burial was slated, meow meow meow
He became reanimated, meow..
He came back to life, Don Gato.

There are two versions of senor Don Gato on the Kididdles site, and you can get to one from the bottom of the other's page: http://kididdles.com/mouseum/s038.html Enjoy! It's a pretty good site!

This is the Web site for KIDiddles, which has a huge number of lyrics for kids' songs. They have a searchable index, links, etc. They also do their best to identify songs which are copyrighted, and to list the names of the songwriters (see their very important fine print). It's a real treasure chest for kids' music. Enjoy!

I knew this would come in handy someday :)!

O Senor Don Gato was a cat.
On a high red roof Don Gato sat.
He was there to read a letter, (meow, meow, meow)
where the reading light was better, (meow, meow, meow)
'Twas a love-note for Don Gato!
I adore you, wrote the ladycat,
who was fluffy white, and nice and fat.
There was not a sweeter kitty, (meow, meow, meow)
in the country or the city (meow, meow, meow)
and she said she'd wed Don Gato!
O Senor Don Gato jumped with glee!
He fell off the roof and broke his knee,
broke his ribs and all his whiskers, (meow, meow, meow)
and his little solar plexus (meow, meow, meow)
Ay Caramba!! cried Don Gato.
All the doctors they came on the run,
just to see if something could be done.
And they held a consultation, (meow, meow, meow)
about how to save their patient, (meow, meow, meow)
how to save Senor Don Gato.
But in spite of everything they tried,
poor Senor Don Gato up and died.
No, it wasn't very merry, (meow, meow, meow)
going to the cemetery, (meow, meow, meow)
for the ending of Don Gato.
But as the the funeral passed the market square,
such a smell of fish was in the air,
though the burial was plated, (meow, meow, meow)
he became reanimated, (meow, meow, meow)
he came back to life, Don Gato!

Don Gato was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. The next verses go.... I adore she wrote a lady cat, who was fluffy white and nice and fat. There was not a sweeter kitty, meow, moew, meow, in the country or the city meow, meow, meow, and she said she'd wed Don Gato. Oh Don Gato jumped so happily, he fell off the roof and broke his knee. Broke his ribs and all his whiskers, meow, meow, meow and his little solar plexus meow, meow, meow, Aay Caramba! cried when Don Gato. When the funeral passed the market square, such a smell of fish was in the air. 9not sure of the next line) meow, moew, meow, He became reanimated, meow, meow, meow, He came back to life Don Gato! He came back to life DON GATO!!!!

Ah, I remember it well! My mother was an elementary music school teacher...and it just so happened that she was MY elementary school teacher. Don Gato was one of my favorites. I've forgotten part of a verse, but here's what I can remember. In the interests of saving space, I'll substitute MMM for Meow Meow Meow

Okay, enough of regressing to 4th Grade. I sure hope someone remembers the missing verse, otherwise I'll have trouble sleeping next week.
